Gardaí were called to a house in Cork by a man who claimed that his wife doused his noodles in washing-up liquid.
But Lucky Hope was the one who ended up as the defendant in court.
“I cooked the noodles and I had chicken in the oven. I was waiting to put the chicken on the noodles. I went to the sitting room. I was watching telly. I went back into the kitchen to take my chicken out of the oven. I put my food on the table. I put the noodles in my mouth. The whole thing was liquid, it was soap,” Mr Hope said.
He said his wife then claimed the plate may have had washing-up residue on it. “She [my wife] said ‘Maybe the dishwasher did not wash the soap off the plate properly’.
“I called the guards so the guards could come and see, to take things into my own hands,” Mr Hope, aged 39, of 104 Lus Na Meala, Banduff, Co Cork, testified at Cork District Court yesterday.
Judge Con O’Leary asked: “If she did that, would it not have gone all bubbly?”
Mr Hope claimed that she had stirred it in under the noodles.
Mr Hope was before the court yesterday on a charge of breaching a safety order by putting his wife, Carmel Hope, in fear.
She claimed that she was in fear and that when the garda arrived, she showed him the safety order. “He threatened me I was going to get what was coming to me. He was threatening my life, basically. For a certain amount of time he is calm and fine and helps me with everything. It is like a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde personality. I am terrified of him.”
His solicitor, Frank Buttimer, asked Mrs Hope if the evidence about the soap in the noodles was not so unusual that one would not make up such a thing.
She replied: “He is a pathological liar. He is so dramatic. It [the soap in noodles claim] is funny. It is like something you would see in a comedy.”
She told Inspector Mary King that her husband had gone to Dublin looking for a job and did not phone her for five days and his phone was not reachable during all of that. She felt that was not reasonable behaviour in an 11-year marriage. He returned on May 8 when the disputed incident with the noodles occurred.
Mr Buttimer said the reason Mr Hope called the gardaí was he wanted them to know what had occurred.
Judge O’Leary ruled: “I cannot say I am sure beyond reasonable doubt that Mrs Hope was in fear, so I am obliged to dismiss the matter.”
