Wexford GAA 2008

I tell a lie. We were 2-3 to nil down up in Fermanagh after 20 minutes and still came back. Quality stuff - Forde went off with a recurrence of his ankle injury near the end and Adrian Flynn missed a difficult free from the wing to win it. With Leitrim beating Down we’re all but promoted. Today also marked the return of Tommy Howlin - if he’s any way fit then he’ll be a really important addition.

Correction - Forde went off with a back injury. Louth at home in 2 weeks time is our last game and there’s also a Division 3 final to be contested by the top 2 teams the week after that. I wouldn’t mind another crack at Fermanagh as they seemed to be dirty bastards today. We’re 4 points ahead of Down but they’ve to play a rearranged game against Limerick next week followed by Fermanagh at home in their last game. We have a 15 points better scoring difference than Down so the only way we’ll be caught is if they win both games by a decent margin and we lose at home to Louth.

We’re actually embarassing ourselves persisting with this now and should really get over it.

From today’s Indo:

Wexford refuse to back down

By Cliona Foley

Friday April 11 2008

WEXFORD are not backing down on contesting the way this year’s National Leagues have been administered and are pressing ahead with their case to the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA).

They still have not received a date for the hearing and the case cannot take place now until next week because of National Congress, but Wexford Chairman Ger Doyle confirmed yesterday that they are not for turning.

Wexford are arguing that allowing Cork back into the NHL and NFL after they had missed two games in each was in direct contravention of what they call was a ‘two strikes and you’re out’ decision taken by Central Council on January 26.

Croke Park did release a formal statement at that time, saying that Central Council had “agreed that, in the event of two games in the hurling or football competitions being awarded in circumstances where a given county cannot field a team, the county shall be automatically disqualified from the current National League in the code in which the two games were not fulfilled.”

However, that was before GAA President Nickey Brennan intervened directly in the Cork row and labour relations specialist Kieran Mulvey was brought in to mediate – drastic measures that eventually solved the impasse and saw Cork resume competitive action after missing two games in each of the national leagues.

The NHL semi-finals are going ahead this weekend with the final in a week’s time, yet Doyle still believes Wexford’s actions could yet succeed in changing it’s competitive outcome.

A separate row is already expected over the resolution of Division 2 of the NFL where it has been suggested that play-offs will be used to separate teams who finish on equal points.

Both Roscommon and Cavan County Boards have already objected to the way this division has been managed in the wake of the Rebel’s return.

Dublin and Meath got the points from the walkovers that Cork were forced to concede, but Roscommon and Cavan argued that the Rebels should have started on minus points, to even things up for the rest of the teams.

I agree Bandage. We shouldnt be staying in div 1 becasue of board room arguments. If we cant do it on the pitch, then we deserve to be relegated. The GAA let Cork back in too easily, but if we didnt complain then, its a bit late to be crying now when its too late.

On another note there are highlights of the Wexford Fermanagh game up on the RTE website from last Sundays, Sunday sport. http://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/index.html or javascript:showPlayer(’/sport/gaa/2008/0406/sundaysport_av.html’)

You’ll also see the newest member of the RTE panel - our very own Skippy Ruth as an analyst on the hurling. Lets hope his career with RTE works out better than Larry O’Gormans one did!

Larry O’Gorman’s punditry career was fooking hilarious. Didn’t he say Gerry Quinn should be shot that time Shefflin received the eye injury? Larry was absolutely wound up any time he was on and was totally incoherent most of the time. He didn’t give a shit though and got a few hundred quid every second week for most of that summer!

Michael Lyster (I think): What should happen Gerry Quinn Larry?

Larry: He should be taken out and shot

Don’t think he appeared too much on it after that. I think it was in 2004 though when we won Leinster so it was handy to have a Wexford man around until we were hockeyed out the gate by Cork.

I never knew RTE employed epileptic leprechauns http://www.thefreekick.com/board/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

marty morrissey…in fairness to davy he is good on clare fm any time i heard him and i say will be a handy addition…

Thanks for that link Mac. Missed the Sunday game last week, didn’t even realize the wexford highlights were shown. You should stick it on the Wexford supporters web site as well.

Did anyone else see the state of Gizzy Lyng on TG4’s hurling coverage today? All that was missing from his brown jacket was elbow patches and it must have been one he borrowed from his Grandad or something. I’m not sure I agree with a current player doing analysis and co-commentary. He must think he’s Reading’s Graeme Murty.

top class debut from davy this evening…he was concise informative and witty…he also looked very dapper in his suit(i believe its the same one he made his comfirmation in…the only negative i could take from it was that he used the words phenominal and fanatastic a little too often but will learn from this outing…

Is Davy Fitzgerald human?

super human possibly…davy seems to have a reputation as being a bit of a prick but in fairness him and his family live and breathe hurling…i know a lad that met him one night at a dinner dance and asked him had he any good goal keeping drills, davy said he would send him on some and took his address, sure your man though that he would never hear from him again…4 days later a big dossier came in the post with over 200 different drills in it all hand written and presumed he came up with most of them himself…he is seriously mad in the head though as are most of his family…

So Down defeated Limerick by 8 points yesterday (4-13 to 1-15) and that means we’re on 10 points from 6 games and they’re on 8 points from 6. Our scoring difference is now better than theirs by 7 points, with their last game at home to Fermanagh and ours at home to Louth. We should be able to beat Louth at home and should concentrate solely on that as a win qualifies us regardless of what Down do and we shouldn’t pay much attention to them. That said the worst case scenario is a Wexford defeat and Down victory with an 8 points swing.

Apparently Richie Kehoe is off to the states for the summer

You can never, ever rely on lads from Wexford town. He’s not gone to Boston but I can confirm that he will be going there in the near future and will miss the championship. Rory Mallon Mark-Two.

Now there’s a blast from the past. what ever happened to that fella?

Him and Nicky Lambert, two of vols finest, but nowhere near inter-county standard.

Here’s one to give you a laugh. Apparently Wexford played Leitrim in a challenge match last weekend and Letrim won by a few points! Am presuming it was a shadow Wexford team but still fairly funny all the same.
