Wexford GAA 2010
Not the version I remember. Was it Bealin who was in charge of the time? after a game saying Doran didnt even tell him he was going and that he saw Doran as one of his main players and how he was shocked that he had gone etc.

Doran was over in London. My brother played against him. Came on in a game he was playing in around half time, scored about 2-5 despite being half cut and won the game on his own. Supposed to have been a hero over there but in fairness that might not have been too hard.
Completely correct with the exception that it was Pat Roe who was in charge of the Wexford side. Doran had played in most of the League games that year and disappeared without any explanation or warning for the coaching staff.

Bandage I’ve been led to believe that the transfer of Maloney is inevitable. I wonder would he have stayed if they won the Junior D title last year.

was pretty much well known why he left, and whilst it was unexpected and a quick exit, it wasnt suprising. actually saw him in quinns after a hurling game later on in the year. he went about making a comeback there in 2007 as well, but that fizzled out.

From the Wexford People http://www.wexfordpeople.ie/sport/hurling/dempsey-takes-reins-2012579.html

TONY DEMPSEY is to be ratified as the new Wexford Under-21 hurling manager. Having held a similiar post in the past in both Under-21 hurling and football, Dempsey also has experience at Senior inter-county hurling and football, while he has also taken charge of a host of club sides.

Dempsey’s last tenure as manager was back in 2001 and 2002 with the Wexford Senior hurling side. In 2001 they lost a controversial All-Ireland semi-final replay to Tipperary in dreadful underfoot conditions in Croke Park.

The Glynn-Barntown clubman was recommended for the position at a meeting of the County Management Committee last week. His ratification at County Board level will be a mere formality.

According to reports, Dempsey will also have charge of the county Intermediate hurling side, while blooding an Under-19 development squad to ensure a flow of players for the Under21 grade over the following years.

Dempsey is determined to hit the ground running and already has brought in last year’s Minor manager, Paul Dempsey (Oulart-The Ballagh), as one of his backroom team. More appointments will follow over the coming weeks.

Fears were growing that Wexford would delay the selection of under-age managers given the embargo on training to March 1, which could once again result in a dismal showing at Under-21 level.

But with the Under-21 football management in place, pressure was applied to have the hurling structures finalised at an early stage, particularly as the majority of counties have already commenced preparations for their respective provincial championships.

Dempsey is determined to have the best available squad for the Leinster series, particularly after last year’s debacle when the Model county sufferred an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Dublin.

With a number of Under-21s and last year’s Minors included in Colm Bonnar’s squad, Dempsey will be working closely with the Senior management as he attempts to hit the ground running, with preparations getting under way within weeks.

The task facing Dempsey and his backroom team is a huge one, but he will be heartened with the display of the Minor side last year who performed impressively before losing an All-Ireland quarter-final to Tipperary after extra-time.

Dempsey has a record of having his sides play with passion and commitment, but he will also be endeavouring to build on his players’ skills. If these factors are coupled together, and with the best players making themselves available, one should see pride once again restored in Under-21 hurling in the county.

Which were?

It’s been mentioned already-figure it out.

It’s gas the way there was uproar about the County Board not appointing minor and U21 managers in good time and having absolutely no strategic vision or even a meaningful discussion about the future of GAA in the county at Convention.

Then it’s subsequently announced that Tony Dempsey has been appointed as U21 manager, how he’ll take charge of the Intermediates, liaise closely with the Senior management and look after an U19 squad which will be used to blood players in preparation for U21.

So it seems like a positive initiative…until you step back and consider that he’s been on the County Board for about the last 40 years and is part of the furniture that’s allowed things to get so shit in the county. He’s hardly the young, progressive force to drive things on but, in fairness to him, lad who played under him generally say he brings good discipline, structure and commitment.

Modern coaching techniques and stuff would completely have passed him out so he could do with getting some young blood on board with him. Storey’s the new minor manager and has his own backroom team. The likes of Fenlon and McCarthy were helping out with the minors last year so Dempsey could do worse than trying to get lads like these on board. If not, Kev might be tempted up from Cork. Kev knows everything about fitness and coaching.

I see Dublin will be lining out in sponsorless jerseys at the weekend in Parnell Park against Wexford in the O’Byrne Cup. Big bucks from Vodafone on the way to them.

Whats the story with Wexford sponsorship this year? Wexford creamery are not sponsors anymore, is that correct?

sportsavers are the sponsors fitzy. they took over last year with their big horrible blue and red logo plastered accross the middle of the jersey.

Challenge Games for the hurlers this weekend against limerick on saturday (venue not given ) and against ballyhale shamrocks on Sunday in Horeswood.

Mallow

Maloney will be moving to St Martin’s over Brendan Furlong’s dead body.

Kilmore oppose Maloney move

KILMORE G.A.A. club is set to oppose the proposed transfer of their young Minor star, Mark Maloney, to St. Martin’s. Maloney was a member of last year’s county Minor hurling set-up and is looked upon as a young player of real potential who has attracted the attentions of the St. Martin’s club.

The young player and St. Martin’s have already handed in a signed transfer request, but it’s understood that Kilmore will refuse to sign the transfer form allowing the player to leave.

When rural clubs are finding it increasingly difficult player-wise given the current economic climate, with some losing players to emigration, it’s little wonder that the seasiders are determined to hold on to their best young talent.

The feedback at the moment is that Kilmore will vehemently oppose the details on the transfer form which state that Maloney is now resident in Murrintown.

However, Kilmore will counter that Maloney is living at home in Bridgetown, from where he travels to Enniscorthy Vocational College each day before returning home each evening.

The request has raised eyebrows which will ultimately lead to very strong opposition from Kilmore, who are desperately disappointed at a Senior club moving in on one of their young players.

The Junior ‘D’ hurling outfit are determined not to let the matter progress any further, as they see the carrot of Senior hurling being dangled in front of Maloney, which proved a real attraction to other young players in the past.

The Kilmore club will state their case to the County Transfers Committee, stating that Maloney is a native of the parish and living in the parish at Bridgetown in their efforts to block the St. Martin’s bid to attract the player away.

Volunteers are getting their comeuppance for setting up a hurling section within the club to rival the Harriers now. Huge uproar at the AGM, huge uproar. Fooking cunts.

The Vols should concentrate on being the most succesful football team in Wexford town:thumbsup:

Why couldnt he just play Senior as an isolated player for St.Martins, he could play away with his home club aswell.

Think senior county managers should give a list to the county board at the start of each year of players outside senior level that should be treated as isolated players for the Senior championship and let play with a senior club nearby. Would add to the quality of the Senior championship aswell as giving a bit of exposure to the players at weaker clubs.

Not a bad idea in principle but I’m eager for this transfer to be rejected purely because it’s another case of poaching by those slimy Martin’s bastards.

Surely as a Wexford supporter you would prefer to see one of your promising players playing at a level higher than Junior D!!!

I’d be in favour of four regional teams comprised of players from non-Senior clubs playing in the senior championship to give these lads exposure at a higher level. But it’s never realistically going to happen in Wexford because of the fixture congestion that would arise given they’d be playing in lower grades with their actual clubs, dual commitments etc.

Of course, I think I was in denial about it. This resulted in a large decrease in sponsorship money didn’t it?

Ryans first time of the year…
From Hoganstand

Jason Ryan has handed first starts to two players in Sunday’s O’Byrne Cup clash with Dublin at Parnell Park.

Conor Carty of Castletown, a first year student in UCD, is making his debut with Joey Wadding of St. Fintan’s also starting his first senior game.

The two newcomers start in a defence which is now without the recently retired Paddy Wallace.

Wexford (O’Byrne Cup v Dublin) - Anthony Masterson, Joey Wadding, David Walsh, Aindreas Doyle, Colm Morris, David Murphy, Conor Carty, Brendan Doyle, Daith Waters, Redmond Barry, Brian Malone, Kieran Kennedy, Ben Brosnan, Diarmuid Kinsella, Paddy Byrne

Still have high hopes for Ben Brosnan and Wexford.
Scored one of the best goals ever in The Park in the semi v Horeswood last year.
