TONY DEMPSEY is to be ratified as the new Wexford Under-21 hurling manager. Having held a similiar post in the past in both Under-21 hurling and football, Dempsey also has experience at Senior inter-county hurling and football, while he has also taken charge of a host of club sides.
Dempseyâs last tenure as manager was back in 2001 and 2002 with the Wexford Senior hurling side. In 2001 they lost a controversial All-Ireland semi-final replay to Tipperary in dreadful underfoot conditions in Croke Park.
The Glynn-Barntown clubman was recommended for the position at a meeting of the County Management Committee last week. His ratification at County Board level will be a mere formality.
According to reports, Dempsey will also have charge of the county Intermediate hurling side, while blooding an Under-19 development squad to ensure a flow of players for the Under21 grade over the following years.
Dempsey is determined to hit the ground running and already has brought in last yearâs Minor manager, Paul Dempsey (Oulart-The Ballagh), as one of his backroom team. More appointments will follow over the coming weeks.
Fears were growing that Wexford would delay the selection of under-age managers given the embargo on training to March 1, which could once again result in a dismal showing at Under-21 level.
But with the Under-21 football management in place, pressure was applied to have the hurling structures finalised at an early stage, particularly as the majority of counties have already commenced preparations for their respective provincial championships.
Dempsey is determined to have the best available squad for the Leinster series, particularly after last yearâs debacle when the Model county sufferred an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Dublin.
With a number of Under-21s and last yearâs Minors included in Colm Bonnarâs squad, Dempsey will be working closely with the Senior management as he attempts to hit the ground running, with preparations getting under way within weeks.
The task facing Dempsey and his backroom team is a huge one, but he will be heartened with the display of the Minor side last year who performed impressively before losing an All-Ireland quarter-final to Tipperary after extra-time.
Dempsey has a record of having his sides play with passion and commitment, but he will also be endeavouring to build on his playersâ skills. If these factors are coupled together, and with the best players making themselves available, one should see pride once again restored in Under-21 hurling in the county.
