I wonder why the govt didn’t issue an alert for people to stay at home? Maybe they did. Capitalism wins.
Tis like Cork
When we get an event like that here people will start to take notice.
Was it forecast though?
Cork gets an event like that every month.
51 dead so far, you’d imagine it will get worse
Unreal,
Well unless they can bring lads back from the dead it won’t get better
61 dead now
Valencia also flooded badly in 1957, after which they re-routed the river, so that it wouldn’t happen again.
Obviously lessons not learned.
How many times did it flood since 57?
Don’t know.
In fairness an incredible amount of rain fell.
I doubt any city in Spain would be able for it.
Although I did read somewhere about warm air from the Mediterranean hitting cold air from the Atlantic making the Valencia region particularly prone to an event like this.
Yes it’s normal for rivers that get manually rerouted to flood again. Hence why building houses on flood plains is a recipe for disaster.
Two images here of before and after the recent rain.
You can see the old river course, which is now a park, ‘flowing’ through the centre of Valencia. The new river flows into the sea just below the city. Below that is a lagoon protected by a manually constructed sea wall.
So I’m guessing that instead of the city centre flooding like in 1957, they have just pushed the problem south of the city where it seems the new river has burst.
Good or bad, I don’t know.
