I think there is a debate within the science community about renewables vs nuclear, can you clarify your expertise on the subject to make such a definitive statement
Yes, but are we exporting it too
I think I recall that Ireland’s energy needs don’t warrant a nuclear plant. We’d be relying on exporting energy to Britain.
In any event wind and wave energy are the future and we have far more of both of those than most anyone, we’re going to be laughing at some point in the future when they are supplying all out energy and while the rest of the western world are sitting rubbing two sticks together.
But no, the roasters want nuculear.
You literally can’t even spell it
I’m writing it like you say it, you dumb hick.
I’m scarlet for your mother
George Monbiot has consistently advocated for nuclear to be part of the world’s energy solution.
I don’t think he’s a roaster.
We were talking about Ireland, not the world. Note the difference please.
Why can’t we use our own advantages & pitfalls to create energy in a positive way?
Advantages……
Wind - we need to harness it further
Wave - I know there are talks of using our offshore & estuaries but will it be harnessed properly.
Solar - we’re not using this enough on a national level.
Pitfalls….
Our waste - we should be using our food waste for Biomass & anaerobic digester energy production.
Agriculture - we can & should be using the slurry from animals to create energy…
Transport - we can try and cut out fossil fuel powered vehicles but that’s going to take time.
Can we not generate power from what’s currently on our busy roadways? The actual vehicles
If we can wind up power to keep a hand held radio going then surely similar systems can be used on roads?
Car drives over mechanism, weight pushes down and unit returns to start position when car passes? On a Road like the M50 which has huge numbers of passing traffic surely we can trap some energy?
If energy can be harnessed from waves then why not actual pollutant vehicles?
Please ask Eamon & Co to think outside the box cc @Little_Lord_Fauntleroy & @Rocko
Waves can’t be harnessed effectively and wind isn’t much good when it doesn’t blow, nuclear is the only way
Can you give us more detail please
No
The Green Party member i listened to this morning on the radio stated that nuclear is only going to get more expensive while renewable energy sources should get more cost effective over time.
The delay in getting tidal off the ground is frustrating. I think we have reached a saturation point as regards onshore wind turbines and think they are a blight on the landscape. PV Solar Panels should be retrofitted to all houses over the next 20 years.
The future is green and reeks of BO
The most expensive part of nuclear is servicing the debt of the capital required to build it. A 50 year loan of billions cost a lot in interest payments
I’m surprised by the forum having so many experts in nuclear power
Your basic nuclear ingredients are getting more expensive as well. Plutonium prices are rising fast (cost of mining it) and the demand for it is increasing worldwide as well. So you’ve a massive initial outlay, enormous running costs, an uncertain supply of the fuel required, the constant threat of ecological disaster and the absolute certainty that when the plant has to close there’s a massive biohazard and expensive maintenance and disposal of the same biohazard.
Are you really? I costed one in early 2008 at about 2 billion plus change for the initial build and the prices have shot up since.
