Mrs Sutton, a 91 year old woman from Bray, on the Six One news there.

She was speaking about a robbery at her home 2 years ago, where she was beaten, had seven ribs broken, a punctured lung and a broken nose. She was dragged along the floor by her hair. She was 89.

She has been unable to return to the house since and stays with her daughter. She gets noticeably upset when she speaks of her old way of life and missing her neighbours. She also gets upset speaking of having to leave the house where she reared her family and lived since 1959. ‘Maybe I’m daft’ she says.

The two thugs who did this had numerous convictions prior to this. One of them was on bail. They each got 10 years, with 2 suspended.

What the fuck is wrong with justice in the country?! If I had my way both of those animals would get bullets in the back of their heads. End of the problem and what they deserve. But life in prison should be the only other option. It’s a fucking disgrace.

8 years behind bars seem quite a fair sentence to me in this case and I say that as somebody who had a grandmother in her 80s living alone in Dublin twice suffer break ins and confrontations by the thugs
who did it during the middle of the night in the late 90s/early 2000s, thankfully without assault in both cases.

Crime rates in the US are high and incarceration rates are the highest in the world so prison isn’t a deterrent

The US criminal justice system isn’t perfect, but there is zero tolerance for repeat violent offenders. In this case, the violence involved can only be described as psychopathic, and everything we know about psychopaths says they cannot be rehabilitated. As you say its nothing to do with deterrence, it’s to do with protecting other potential victims.

The discrepancy between black incarceration and other races is almost entirely for drug offenses. The “war on drugs” and sentencing guidelines in the US is certainly insane and accomplishes nothing. The only drug crime where I would argue a prison term is appropriate is selling drugs to kids.

Prison is supposed to serve two purposes - punishment and rehabilitation.

Punishment is supposed to serve as a deterrent.

Clearly in some cases it won’t, because you can’t eliminate crime, but you don’t do way with the rule of law merely because some people on INTERNET forums feel like shrieking.

I gave an opinion that it was way too soft a sentence and it does nothing to protect society in 5 years time when they are out. You think its a adequate sentence for this crime, for repeated offenders, who are as labane points out, psychopaths who will repeat the behaviour immediately.
