I was looking at Barrack Street there on Google Maps and I was wondering where have all the sweet shops gone. Barrack St is where I went to school and at break time and lunch time we’d funnel out onto Barrack St and cram into the shops, Connolly’s for a cream bun, O’Connells for a quarter pound of American Hard Gums, Seanie Browns for a single Carroll’s and a match, Bridgie Walsh’s to do a spot of robbing and Hennebrys for a blaa. They are all gone now. Seanie Browns and O’Connells are private homes. Connollys is a veterinary surgery, Hennebrys is an off licence and Bridgie Walsh’s was bought by the school and first turned into the Black Johnny museum and then demolished for car parking. Do children not buy sweets and cigarettes any more?
