Day trip?
Half a bottle of Malbec down here. It’s a Thursday tradition of mine, similar to @Tassotti Monday tradition. It’s a reward for the work week nearing an end.
Malbec is a fine grape, and good Malbec one of the best values around. Cahors can be lovely tack, which is where Malbec originated.
Yep, have visitors from the old country, so hitting the wineries is compulsory.
you couldn’t be giving them blue nun like they lads on here would be used to
Would you cover much in a day?
I’ve always wondered about this. Has the resurgence in French Malbecs been due to the popularity of their Argentine counterparts in the late 90s/early 00s? And are they now overtaking the Argys?
Napa valley is only about 30 miles from end to end, so you could hit a lot of wineries if you wanted. 2 in the morning, lunch and two in the afternoon works well. If you go to too many you end up not being able to taste anything, and joining wine clubs.
I’d say they love to see the big thick Mick heads on ye and throw out the plonk.
Was there on my honeymoon, great spot
Probably right I’d say as Cahors wouldn’t have been popular or even known outside France years ago. There’s about 10x the amount of Malbec made in Argentina compared to France.
Was in Mendoza years ago as well when I was an unappreciating roaster. Done a cycle tour of the vineyards but would have preferred a bottle of quilmes. What a shame.
I thought I banned you last week?
There’s no plonk to be had in Napa mate, it’s not Australia we’re talking about. Lot of good wine in Oz as well, but also a lot of mass produced generic wine.
Up to recently most Irish people knew nothing about wine, we’re as good at wine snobbery now as anyone.
What was the nicest wine you tasted today?
I haven’t had any wine today mate.
The nicest wine yesterday was a 07 Cab at Miner. That could be faulty memory though as it was the last winery of the day, and the wine used to sell me on the wine club membership. Had a nice bottle of Merlot later at dinner and I wouldn’t normally be a big fan of Merlot.

I won’t. I’ll uber where ere I go. I’m going to have a stress free break.
World Malbec Day being celebrated a week early in the Merrion this afternoon. Looking forward to some sniffing and swilling.
A little personal goes well with wine.
