It’s his default setting to say what should have happened rather than to acknowledge what actually did happen. He probably took some soft media course where he was told that negativity is a positive if you want to be a pundit, or maybe he’s just a miserable cunt.
There might be some merit in starting a thread to log all these Houghtanisms if he was any way interesting but sadly he’s not
