World Cup 2014 Mediawatch

Dunphy went on about how Hodgson made the wrong call in not bringing JT back. Cunningham said firmly Hodgson was right and that it would have damaged dressing room morale because Terry is a divisive character and didn’t play in the qualifiers. Dunphy asked what was the evidence of that. “The same as you have, Eamon, none”, replies Cunny.

Dunphy says that Lallana and Lambert were brought in and they didn’t play. They were brought in during the qualifiers or for friendlies during that time, clamps Cunny, and in any case, it’s not comparing like with like, as they have different characters to EBJT.

Actually the funniest thing about it was the confused look on Didi’s head bangslap in the middle of the two of them. You could nearly read his thoughts ‘WTF is going on? Should I say something here? Is that what they want from me? I think I’ll just keep quiet’’

the following may have already been discussed but wtf does Bill O’Herlihy keep calling Ronnie Whelan “Ron” ??

I believe he was occasionally referred to as “Dublin’s Ron Whelan” during his early years at Liverpool.

World Cup goals by club and league as of day 9

Clive Tylesdley commented that many of the Iranian players have their Christian name printed on their jersey.

“He looks a skillful player, the Portuguese centre forward.” - Stephen Alkin mentioning that absolute donkey Eder for Portugal.

Brian Kerr has been in fine form tonight.

 He’s woeful. Awful touch, slow and indecisive in possession.

Amazing Amido couldn’t get into the Portugal team.

Stephen Alkin reckons USA have only ever beaten one European team at the WC Finals, forgetting about Larry Gaetjens knocking England out if the WC in Belo Horizonte in 1950.

What’s this shit on RTE now?!

Donal Og Cusack analysing the 'keepers in the World Cup against a deathly backdrop of REM’s “Everybody Hurts”.

Is he marking them for hotness?

Michael O Neill couldn’t remember Neymars name.

Neymar.

Peter Collins seems like a harmless sort of lad but he’s not a very good commentator. He can’t seem to figure out who any of the Cameroon players are and he’s really slow at realising what has happened or what the referee has awarded.

He was a smashing F1 commentator.

I was watching RTE’s coverage of the early game and it struck me that Michael O’Neill is a bland simpleton. He offers absolutely no insight either.

I disagree with Didi Hamann a bit but he usually has something interesting to say and can put his points across well.

Not the most difficult gig in the world that mind you, cars going round and round in a circle for a few hours.

Usual hyperbole from rte lads about how bad brazil are. ‘Sad’ ‘embarrassing’ etc. they’re not great but they’re set to comfortably win the group. They seem to be basing the argument on the fact that brazil are usually some phenomenal team. They’ve been underwhelming in every World Cup of my lifetime ffs.

Giles predicts 5-1 to Brazil. He mugged me off last week so I am backing that.

He was good, Kennedy was a great co commentator.
