Real fans . Not banker barrow boys dressed up in costumes . These are grassroots darts people who are all part of the club and county structure .

A bona fide Lakeside classic in progress here between Australia’s Raymond Smith and Belgium’s Davy van Baelen.

Davy has just broken throw to level up at 2-2 in the final set and our favourite Belgian darts fanatic Jacky is dancing in aisles.

Champagne darts from Raymond as he takes the match by finishing 60 by hitting double top, single 10 and double 5.

Splendid around the hemispheres finishing from the Aussie.

Late night Lakeside action as last year’s semi-finalist and the holder of six ranking titles, Jamie Hughes, takes on Yorkshire stalwart Martin Atkins.

Lovely to see Brian “Doggy” Dawson sticking around to support his Yorkshire team-mate despite the late hour and the fact that Doggy has a huge test early tomorrow when he takes on “The Silencer”, Jeff Smith.

Yozza will be favourite here but Martin, known as “The Assassin” is a 12 time Lakeside veteran and his experience may well prove crucial, although personally I’d have preferred if he’d changed his nickname this year given that Jo Cox was his local MP.

I’ll never forget the opening match of the 2013 championships when Wexford’s Jason Cullen famously took out The Assassin.

Sweet revenge for Wexford for the events of November 1963 in Dallas.

Trivia: Jamie Hughes is a big fan of AFL team St. Kilda and plays in their colours.

The Assassin strikes with pinpoint accuracy by hitting bullseye to level up at 1-1 in sets.

1-1 and 2-2.

This game couldn’t be any more level if it was a spirit level being held up by a tightrope walker in Holland.

Both players averaging over 90.

That’s the standard you need to contend for the world title.

Scratch that, actually.

Martin misses a load of doubles to hand that leg and set 3 to Jamie on a 3-1 scoreline.

Atkins’ diet of fat 20s and fat 5s is thinning out his chances considerably here. He’ll need to supersize his scoring if he wants to pile the pounds on to his bank balance by advancing to round 2.

78 in two darts from Martin. That’s more like it.

Hughesy hits 180 and 177 in the last leg to clinch his place in Round 2.

An average of over 94 from him tonight.

True world class.

Lads dressed as the Blues Brothers and Super Mario in the crowd here in Frimley Green.

Macarena playing at The Lakeside ahead Smith v De Vos. It follows a great rendition of YMCA.

Surely not?

You’re the one that I want just after fading out there. The lads dressed in cheap teletubbies suits up the front were going crackers for it.
