The reality is if Limerick actually bothered there in the 2nd half they could have scored 7 or 8 goals and 40+ points. It was one hell of a steep learning curve for Cork but could have been a whole lot worse

I actually thought to myself that this is this teams achilles heel. Kilkenny would have been ruthless. Limerick looked to have eased off in the 2nd half. Some day soon that lack of ruthlessness will cost them.

Graham Mulcahy’s point rom the side to win the 18 Final when he and his team were under the cosh was the most important score in the history of Limerick hurling. If they didn’t hold on that day they probably would be a shadow of what they actually became.

It’s one thing for a clearly inferior team to be outclassed by a massively superior opponent at their peak, ie. Antrim 1989, Waterford 2008 and Cork 2021.

Offaly 1984 and 2000 were not favoured but neither were they considered without a chance. They put up pathetic resistance in both.

The real hall of shame is populated by favoured teams who did not perform.

Serious candidates here are:
Offaly 1995
Kilkenny 2004

I’d have Kilkenny 1998 and 1999 and Tipperary 2011 in the mix but I don’t think they’re as bad the two aforementioned.

I think the winner of this prestigious competition, at least in my lifetime, has to be Cork 1982. Apparently unbackable favourites, they were completely wiped out. Their late consolation goal, which should have been disallowed, was given in sympathy, according to the umpire who gave it. The ultimate insult, apart from handpassing a one on one goal chance over the bar in sympathy.

Mulcahy’s point was a moment in time - especially after he gifted Galway a point just before it. There was a lot of hurt driving his displays that year. Limerick came of age ahead of time in 2018 but Galway were well off it on the day. A Clare - Limerick final would have been interesting…

I remember bailing my eyes out above in my bed with the sadness of losing, not wanting my Dad to know I was upset.

Galway were favourites. Kilkenny were poor and didn’t offer very much but it was a wet day and Galway couldn’t get rid of them until late in the game when Noel Lane’s pull - which was less than a piledriver - was fumbled into the net by Kevin Fennelly.
