Worst pubs in Dublin

The 51 is now the no. 1 pub to avoid in Dublin.

cannot believe how we were treated on saturday the 26th August 2006. how much of our blood sweat and tears have gone into making that pub what it was yesterday. then to see it all thrown back in our faces at 7.30 yesterday evening. a simple request to put on the premiership as is made every saturday during the football season (and previously complied with without question) was turned down in favour of the beginning of tiger woods’ third round in some meaningless us tour competition purely because some crusty auld fooks want to have something (non football) in the background as they drink a pint of guinness every 2 hrs counting down to the day they slip into a permanent coma. fook those coonts, we were the best customers that pub ever had. fook the proprietor, fook the management and fook anyone associated with that business, we will never grace the (newly) varnished floors of that establishment again. the 51 is dead to us.

The 51 is consigned to the annals of history. But I’m happy to have loved and lost rather than to never have loved at all.

The 51 - RIP.

Any suggestions for a new local in the Ballsbridge/Baggot St/Donnybrook area?

Bandage from the favourite pubs thread…(Still havent mastered the quote button)
“I like the 51 in Haddington Road too because we own that joint! We choose what gets put on TV, how loud the sound is, when the TV gets turned off, when the music gets turned on, the playlist for the evening and when we leave. Never once been thrown out of there despite being a disgrace on numerous occasions, none more so than last Saturday.”

About time someone put a stop your messing in the 51, other punters have the right to look at stuff too yez cooonts. And as you say your behaviour has been less than suitable on numerous occasions!

You’ll be back!

I can confirm Bandage was in negotiations with 51 staff yesterday in a neutral boozer. It might be too early to say the war is over but there were definite signs of progress and I believe an apology from a 51 barman.

The apology was welcome but until I discuss the matter further with all related parties I cannot confirm whether a resolution will be found.

It appears that the accountant failed to pay an ntl bill seeing as the bar also has the sky digital platform. Both platforms are required so different events can be shown on different screens throughout the bar but the accountant thought he had spotted a potential cost saving and instead caused ntl to be cut off. This issue came to light on Friday and after frantic efforts to have ntl reinstalled in time for the weekend?s sporting feast failed we were left with Saturday evening?s malaise.

I blame Paddy though and the fact that he?s a relatively new barman there and is also a fellow Wexican doesn?t save him from my wrath. Instead of explaining the matter he started fiddling around with the TV for ages. Why didn?t you simply tell us the state of affairs Paddy???!!! I appreciated Aidan?s explanation and expression of remorse yesterday however. In fairness those old folks drink their every night, we just take over the bar at weekends. Also, we?re young and (relatively) able bodied and had planned on heading into town after the football whereas those old timers were settling in for the night so it actually seems reasonable enough that they allowed them to watch the golf. A whole lot of hurt and soul searching could have been avoided if Paddy had have explained this on Saturday rather than pretending to be trying to fix the signal!!!

I think its clear that there have been wrongs on both sides. Bandage you clearly jumped to conclusions about the the old dudes’ commitment to the place. I think its high time you swallowed your pride and go back.

Question is though will it ever be the same again?

No, I knew the old folks were true regulars. Sure old Frank even brings a lamp with him so he can read his paper/book down in the corner of a winter evening. It?s just they?re old and like society does generally with old people I expected their opinions would be thrown on the scrapheap and left to rot leaving us to watch the football. Though maybe a pub that doesn?t pander to the loud, brash youth and has respect for all its clientele should be admired rather than criticised. There may be hope for the 51 yet.

To be honest, I have found this whole situation to be most unsettling and I am currently of the opinion that a solution is a long way off! I still think we should have kicked the sh*t out of the old fooks as we had alluded on the previous evening and then we would never have been put in this most difficult of positions!

I think we should compose a letter with a list of our demands forthwith and I’ll hand deliver it tomorrow.

I though Sam compiled a letter when he got home from Leggs on Saturday night???

Are you planning on giving up going to all pubs in protest? Otherwise it’s really just swings and roundabouts for the Vintners Association.

They have about 95% coverage of the Dublin market according to www.lva.ie so there are still opportunities to drink in non-LVA establishments.

I had planned on knocking on the door and handing it over but if standing in the doorway counts as setting foot on the premises then I’ll ring them and ask them to come outside and collect the letter. I’m more hopeful today that common ground can be reached prior to Saturday’s game which will be the 2 year anniversary of the first ever Ireland game I watched in the 51 (3-0 at home to Cyprus).

Come on over to the Black Forge Inn in walkinstown, have a pint with the local labourers, or are you racist because it’s black??

Came across this while searching for something else. Turns out the lads had plenty of run ins with the 51 before.

Worst pub in Dublin has to be the Oliver St. John Gogarty.

That is a very old thread.

iamthelaw even posting!

Larry Murphys on Baggot Street would get my vote. At least Gogarty’s is in Temple Bar so some degree of shiteness is par for the course.

The Beaumont House, Messer Maguires, Lagoona IFSC and Harbour Master IFSC (purely cause of the knobish attitude of the bar staff). All shit pubs.

Harbourmaster is an interesting one. Due to close proximity with old work I was in there every Friday (and at least one other night during the week) for three years. Some of my best nights ever were spent in that place. Decent buzz in there on Fridays, all of work would be out, pints of Guinness (only) were decent and their chicken wings were ideal for that little snack at around 8pm when you were on the beer since work.

Apart from that the place had nothing going for it. The bar staff were the worst I have experienced anywhere in my life they literally treat you with contempt. Cunts. Rubbish location and overpriced but if Im honest the place with the best drinking memories of mine in Dublin.

Drank there a few times after I was relocated to the IFSC but couldn’t warm to it. Found it devoid of athmosphere and often ended up just heading back towards Camden street.

great story runt
