Ice Hockey tournament well under way now. USA turned heads as they routed Slovakia 7-1, Russia beat the gallant team Slovenia 5-2 in a very entertaining game, Russia’s big guns Ovechkin and Malkin were both on the score sheet. Canada opened up with a 3-1 victory over Norway.
Sweden were rocked by the news that captain Henrik Zetterberg will miss the rest of the tournament with a back injury. And his absence was felt as the Swedes laboured to a 1-0 win over Switzerland. A victory that owed much to Henrik Lundqvist’s performance between the pipes. The NY Rangers goalie stopped all 26 shots he faced.

Russia v usa is a saucy affair here in the hockey
Russia v USA in the Men’s Ice Hockey now. It’s 1-1 at 2/3 time.
This of course is a repeat of the famous 1980 final at Lake Placid, when capitalism battled communism.
The communist President Brezhnev was said to have taken that defeat so hard that it precipated the decline in his health that led to his death two years later.

Finland have been dealt a massive blow with the news that Aleksander Barkov will miss the rest of the tournament with a knee injury. The 18 year old Center was taken #2 overall by the Florida Panthers in last years NHL draft.

Russia V Slovakia has just started on BBC. The Slovaks have been the major disappointment of the tournament so far, the 7-1 pasting the Yanks gave them was bad enough but losing 3-1 to rank outsiders Slovenia was a total embarrassment.
Russia will be desperate to bounce back and secure as high a seeding as possible. But if the Slovaks finally turn up they are capable of troubling the hosts.
Russia playing overtime again as a much improved Slovakia have held them to a 0-0 draw in regulation. Goaltender Jan Laco has been in inspired form for the Slovaks. Looks like we’re heading to another shoot out with 2 mins left in OT.
Russia win the shoot out 2-0. By my rough calculations they will play Norway in the first round of the play offs while Slovakia have set up a mouth-watering derby game against the Czech Republic.
