Our resident US law expert strikes again.
It isnāt legal, even in Michigan which has pretty lax gun laws. If you own a gun and you have minors in your home you are responsible for securing it. Why do you think the parents are being charged if it was legal? Minors cannot legally buy or possess a firearm, the only exceptions would be under adult supervision like hunting or at a firing range. It would be common enough in the Midwest for parents to take teenagers hunting or to the firing range, but not give them guns as presents ffs.

Of course it wouldnāt be an uncommon thing to give a person under the age of 18 shooting lessons and a gun of their own, as you very well know. Itās the equivalent of lads in this country under the legal driving age driving farm machinery out on the road. Youāll say thatās uncommon next.
It is not illegal in swathes of America to buy a minor a gun for a gift, as you well know. How that gun is registered and stored is subject to law, but the complete lack of scrutiny renders this law more of an open window than a closed door (as you well know)
