I don’t know about that there must be some explanation but I say most of it is bad coaching.
My lady plays soccer and ladies football and they have very strong keepers in both… but both teams decided to put one of their best players into goals from the get go. The amount of games I would see where they have done the opposite and put the worst player in there, out of the way, is unreal.
Watching last night’s football, there were certainly a couple of howlers. Obviously the square ball, the goal that wasn’t. It was shocking goalkeeping. The big high ball. I was just thinking, why don’t they put in more high balls? They should have. They’d have won it easy.
Secondly, the Fermanagh goalie, the ball over her head as well. Shocking stuff. So, one thing I was thinking, are the goals too big for them? The women are obviously shorter than men. So is it that the goals are too high or them?
The Fermanagh goalie the ball was hit at her head high and she just let it through her hands. That wasn’t the fault of the goals being too big.
I did some goalkeeping coaching with lgfa teams, realized after a while I was years too late, nothing was done with them at underage so trying to teach them the absolute basics was pissing against the wind, just could not get their heads around it, just smile and nod and get it wrong again. No doubt there’s girls that could make a better hand of it but if they were any use outfield they were out of bounds, numbers just weren’t good enough to sacrifice a half decent player to the nets
We’ve an u14 lgfa goalkeeper I’d hazard she’s better than a lot of current intercounty goalkeepers.
Ladies teams still very behind the curve in terms of fear of paying coaches… and the quality internally can be poor then, as it’s previously shitty goalies giving the coaching
And like others have said, goalies are completely ignored underage so they miss out on ‘development’

I wouldn’t be too critical of the first mistake the fermanagh goalie made but the 2nd one was soo bad. Straight at her head, is it lack of co ordination?

They use them goals from u13 ladies football. It’s an absolute joke 
Out local soccer club have a “goalkeeper academy” for 45 mins after training one night a week. Lots of players do it even if outfield. They have a couple of very good keepers in girls teams as a result
That’s actually very smart thinking. I’m surprised the players didn’t want to play out the field though. That’s a problem in most clubs where most keepers see themselves as ideally being outfielders or aren’t kept honest by a reliable No.2. The growing trend now is that town teams in particular might end up with a promising LOI keeper who didn’t quite make the grade switching back to GAA.
Problem is, not many clubs can sacrifice a really good player in goals. Its the sort of thing you’ll only see in townie clubs really, or you’ll have one lad who is just hellbent on being a goalie.
We used to tell any fella who went in goals for a game that he’d be guaranteed the next 3 games, 1 in goals, 2 outfield. The hope would be that one of the not so great lads would get a grá for it. More often than not, we’d solve the conundrum, but me man wasn’t any great shakes either. But in most cases, he was happy to be on the team and tried his best and worked hard to improve so what else can you hope for really.
In the end, its just a goalie.
Goals is a much more popular position with kids now than it used to be. Lot of boys be fighting over it… guaranteed possession etc for kickouts
Hard to sacrifice good outfield player alright but in ladies football underage if you can’t get a decent kick out away to clear lines you could be pinned in own half for the entire game
Also can nearly gtee player development trials etc
Basketball is the answer again
My youngest is a daycemt soccer goalie, she doesn’t play Gah, she doesn’t mind playing in goal but the coach wants her out the field, she’s a better goalie tbh but will never develop in that position as she rarely gets to play there

I would say that the most basic skills of basketball include the absolute fundamentals of goalkeeping, you can build on that
Main goal is to win I’d imagine
Dont give up the day job
Just rewatching the highlights of the junior final, First goal could happen the best of them but second shouldn’t happen at that level. I know it was the junior final but still
