You'd want your head examined or have daughters like Hopper McGrath, to manage a Ladies team thread

That’s Belfield in Enniscorthy I’d say you’re thinking of

@Bandage it has to be one of the most absurd refixing of a game I’ve ever seen. I’d love to know the thought process that went into it

I refereed a challenge match there on Saturday. A pleasant stress free affair on a beautiful day. Not too much whistling. One thing that is noticeable is that when we were playing at school and underage, any sport, there were always a select few lads who were just a cut above average. Classy players, they seemed to always have more time on the ball, and it just looked that bit more effortless. This is becoming more and more apparent in the ladies game now. It used to be that there was honesty and endeavour, but now you’re seeing genuinely talented players who can keep their calm when under pressure, dummy, make space, and pass a ball into a player in space, make a run. Intelligent football to my mind, executed under pressure, in situations where I know back in the day I’d just have cleared the ball from my vicinity to any other vicinity (fong it up ta fuck we used to say). It’s what makes sport a pleasure to watch, players who are just better than you ever are, were or will be. I presume it is in part because the ladies are training and being trained the same as the lads from childhood.
Anyhow it’s a pleasure to watch a game like that, and get a runaround whilst you are at it.

Would you tog out properly when reffing a challenge match or just tuck the ends of the trousers into your socks?

I tog out because I like the run. In the winter I’d wear leggings, long sleeves and a hat though, same as if you were out for a jog.

Makes it more likely that you’d be taken seriously I think.

Ah I’d always tog out for a game in black. I haven’t bothered getting any referee geansai or anything, but I have a black running top and shorts and socks, I’d always wear them over leggings and a longsleeve top if it’s cold regardless. If people have trained hard for a competitive match, you owe them the basic courtesy, I’d reckon at least.

I also have the sense, rightly or wrongly, that you have a duty of care, and that the players know they can play hard, and be played against hard, but that you will (do your very best at least) try and ensure that they can play safely within the rules, and won’t be exposed to unpunished violence. A duty to make all the players feel they are in a safe environment. It sounds patronising and wanky, but I can’t help feel that is one of the main responsibilities. I think you can do that better if you’re dressed appropriately.
Most of the lasses are young, and many away from home probably for the first time.
I look at them and think if my daughter were like that, I’d be really proud of her.

How do you sort Umpires, if members of competing teams following do you have much issues with dodgy calls?

Not too much. What can you do? Nothing really. Same as sidelines. I just tell the teams at the start that I can’t see the lines so I’ll call it my best, and if the umpire signals it over I go with that. Occasionally, if it looks a really bad call, I’ll ask the player did it go over. They are generally fairly honest.
I’ve been asked to referee a senior IC game next weekend though and I’m not really looking forward to it. Games like last weekend I find enjoyable are a rarity. Mostly I’m hoping for it to finish without any further major incident.

I used to do a bit with a young referee. Generally he’d only have two of us.

In that case I’d always be happier doing the goal myself rather than being accompanied by a selector or supporter of one of the teams
You couldn’t trust them to make the correct call plus you couldn’t trust a cunt to stop leaning against the goal either.

It’s an easy enough job if you simply position yourself properly as play develops.

Also helps the referee have a pair of trustworthy eyes there too.

Honestly I find it very difficult sometimes.

Wexford down to play camogie and football at the same time on Sunday. Camogie and LGFA said they didnt make a fuss when the master fixtures were released in January, nor did any other county. Wexfords fault for not expecting to get to a Div 3 football final and Div 2 camogie semi final.

Camogie team have offered to move it to Saturday and sort out the costs themselves and the administration of the ground etc. Camogie say no because the national congress is on. Very important you see, you cant have anyone missing congress to go to a Div 2 league semi final. I’m not sure who going to congress would be going to the game, but better off letting the 2 girls on both teams miss one of the games.

The sooner the LGFA and camogie sort themselves out the better. People talk about how the men are treated better, but they dont realise that it is their own organisation that is an absolute joke shop and nothing at all to do with the men getting preferential treatment.

The camogie crowd in particular seem to be absolute cunts for deliberately causing matches to clash

No ONE CLUB MODEL until the Camogie and LGFA show they can become one organisation.

Fuck you you GPA cunts.

Meath manager Eamonn Murray says he expects that Vikki Wall will make the move to the AFLW later this year. Though, he cannot understand why she would want to play the “dreadful” Aussie rules.

“Of course that’s going to happen,” Murray said when asked if Meath players like Wall and Emma Duggan will attract the attention of ALFW teams.

"That is going to happen, yeah. I’d say we’re losing Vikki now in September and I don’t know how many more we’ll lose.

"I don’t know why you’d want to play that sport because it’s dreadful stuff to watch. I can’t understand it. There’s no skill at all."

You should expand it to the full!

“She’s getting a good contract I’m sure over there,” said Murray, who insisted that ‘I don’t begrudge it to her’.

Asked if he had details of the club in question, Murray shook his head.

“No, I know nothing, no. She’ll definitely go alright.”

Murray isn’t a fan of the oval ball game.

“I think if any of yee check, the players coming back, the Sinead Goldricks or the Lauren Magees, or any of them, they don’t exactly set the world on fire when they come back over here. They’re not going to win the Championship for any team. They keep saying, ‘Oh we’re going out here and it’s professional and we’re training seven days a week’. How much training do you want like, you know? You certainly won’t improve your skills over there. I’m not bitter about it, far from it, it’s great to have a country like that that the girls can spend a few years over there and enjoy that year or two and come back.”

Classless

What kind of contracts would they be on btw

Fuck all. I posted about it previously, they have tiered categories. Irish girls prob get accommodation and other perks to supplement the shit wage.

Now maybe those wages are gone up too, but with 4 new teams i doubt by much. Any woman here on a county team would make it handy out there. They have a longer season too so might improve the wages

Lifestyle, bit of coin.

Yeah exactly. Wouldnt begrudge them at all. Worse things in life to be doing
