I have no obsession with Villa, more with the fact that Darren Bent is valued at 18m given whats out there, seems an astonishing price. Still, Houllier has great record of buying strikers so Iām sure he knows what hes at.
Chelsea were in a different realm of spending for few years should they be counted different? Bent was valued at 18 m because he is a proven premier league scorer over the last 6 years something Dzeko orSuatez are not. We have seen enough of these European superstars come into the Epl and flop.
Chelsea gave up spending after Ballack and Shevchenko and are no better than the likes of Utd now. City are actually in a higher bracket again than Chelsea because they have to be, because they dont hace the CL or theyāre not in London. I would even put Spurs as potentially bigger spenders than Chelsea right now, unless of course Abramahovic decides to spend big again which seems unikely.
As for Bent I understand the stats, but 24m for a player who cant even make the English team given their paucity of goalscoring strikers is a bit unvelievable, its not as if Iām the only person who thinks this.

On Bent, he is exactly what Villa have needed Since Yorke left. Villa have link men and great players to deliver a ball but no out and out finisher, if Bent never scores a goal for Villa he in my book is still the right buy for Villa, itās just a pity we didnāt get him 18 months ago when O Neill said he wasnāt worth the 10m being asked and he would only go as high as 8m since then Bent has 32 prem goals. You also have to take into account Villas position in the league at the moment, without european football and looking at a relegation dog fight itās not easy to attract players from europe. All in all I think Bent is the best striker we could have signed and if yoU knew the clauses the max that will be paid out on him is 20.5m
But Chelsea were seen to be in a different category to everyone else back then, the same as City are now, it was financial doping, as is Citys now, but Citys is on an entirely larger scale again than Chelseas was out of necessity.
