125 Years of the GAA

2009 sees the 125th Anniversary of the founding of the GAA in 1884. This has proven to be one of the most important dates in the history of Ireland and has produced the organisation that has been central in defining us as a nation. 125 years on, our basic mission and values remain the same; the promotion of our games, our culture, a sense of place and identity from a premise of community activity and support. In 2009, we wish to celebrate in style our first 125 years.

The 125 Committee under the chairmanship of Armaghs Jarlath Burns have organised an extensive calendar of events to celebrate our history. A special edition Late Late Show on RT TV on January 9th commences the year of celebration with one of the highlights a 125 Anniversary Spectacle in Croke Park on January 31st, shortly afterwards. The Allianz GAA National Football League game between Dublin and All Ireland champions, Tyrone will be played under the Croke Park floodlights as part of this spectacle.

St. Patricks Day will see a GAA Parade Pageant as part of the Dublin St. Patricks Day festival and L na gClub is on May 10th

The significance the GAA holds in Ireland is exemplified by the fact that Uachtarn na hireann, Mary McAleese is hosting a GAA Garden Party at ras an Uachtarn on July 6th a wonderful honour for the members of the Association.

Later in the year the graves of the founders of the GAA will be rededicated and the year will come to a spectacular close on Christmas Day or St. Stephens Day when RT TV broadcast a documentary on the Association.

I wonder if Mary will have us up, or will her garden party will be strictly for Franks only

Can’t wait for the GAA special on The Late, Late. Can you imagine the competition and some auld wan on the phone saying she wouldn’t be particularly interested in premium tickets for the All Ireland Club Finals and Pat ripping the tickets up on air?

To be fair on the oul wan who tore up the tickets on Friday a more fair comparison would be if the competition winner ripped up a pair of tickets for Up For the Match or something.

Good man Christy…

L na gClub Videos
2009 represents the 125th anniversary of the GAA and celebrations have taken place throughout the year at all levels to commemorate this milestone. May 10, L na gClub was set aside as the Day of the Club where over 2,000 GAA clubs around the country and worldwide celebrated the anniversary with games and commemorative events in their local communities.

To ensure that this day was properly recorded for future generations, the GAA commissioned video productions of six L na gClub celebrations across the country, namely Youghal GAA Club, Cork; Silverbridge GAA Club, Armagh; Round Tower GAA Club, Clondalkin, Dublin; St. Brigids GAA Club, Roscommon; Fr. Sheehys GAA Club, Tipperary and Athy GAA Club, Kildare.

Must pencil all those dates into my diary … oh wait, my pencil’s broken … no,… (snap!) … it is now … oh well, guess I’ll have to live with the dissappointment of missing some of them … or all of them (fingers crossed).

Maynooth GAA have come up with a novel way to raise funds and commemorate a piece of history into the bargain on All-Ireland football final morning.

On Easter Monday, 1916, a troop of Maynooth men, led by the last governor general of Ireland, Domhnall Ua Buachalla, marched into battle from Maynooth College along the Royal Canal.

This Sunday, the local club are planning to walk back into history and celebrate 125 years of the GAA by following in their forefathers’ footsteps on the Walk to Croker.

Leading the way on the walk will be Joe Buckley, grandson of Domhnall, and Joe’s son Declan, who like his great-grandfather plays with the Maynooth senior hurling team.

Over 100 people will take part in this unique event, with the walkers setting off at 7am along the 14-mile route, where walking time is estimated at between four and five hours.

Think someone did the cycle to Croke Park too on the old style bikes. Can’t remember from which county.

Bought this book yesterday, just published. Highly recommend it-

A very novel idea and approach to it, love that kind of outside the box thinking. I’d imagine it’d be an interesting aul stroll too, with some good yarns and a few bottles for the way.

I’ll have a look out for that book, cheers.

Is every priest a paedophile in your eyes ncc?
