20 years ago today

The Stone Roses’ first album was released.

By coincidence I have it in the car with me at the moment, was listening to it the other day. Didn’t get into them straight away; think I first heard it around 1991 on advice from a friend at school. Played it to death after that, anthem of an album through college. Bought it on CD then around 10 years ago and still have it.

Quality album. Not one weak song on it.
It epitomises a whole cultural scene which can’t be said for many albums.

What a day. 20 years, fucking hell, where does the time go.

I think I’ll “resurrect” my old sig to mark the day

I know, 20 years! In fairness to the band, looking at that photo, you could say that they were trend setters when it came to a look; if you saw that style walking down Grafton street today you wouldn’t bat an eyelid. And that could also be said about the music that they did. How many bands were inspired by them…

There was another picture. Saw it in NME (I think) as the second album was beginning to come out. Ten Story Love Song was riding high if memory serves me correctly, and the picture summed them up for me, top of the fucking world, their hands over their heads linked. Cant fucking find it now mind you.

Fuck it, even Second Coming was a decent album, just was never gonna match the sheer audacity of Stone Roses.

agree totally with that, great album great time.

i must say i always loved Second Coming also i know it took a lot of flak but not from me i thought it was superb.
Of their time.

Have it on the iPod now already since Locke put up the post. What a fucking first song…

It’s a pity Reni has disappeared from the music scene. One of the best drummers I have ever heard. And clearly the coolest drummer ever.

They were fucking genius. I must have listened to that album a milion times when i was a teenager, great stuff, especially if your stoned.

Just for you Flanbo

Its a remarkable album Locke, I couldn’t get my head around it at the time but I knew it was great, and it took me a few years to truly appreciate it. Couple it with Doolittle and it was a great year. Something Happens released Been There… in 1989 as well.

1989 was one of the best years of my life and the soundtrack of that year was pretty good (I seem to remember an awful lot of Dinosaur Jnr and Sonic Youth as well at the time?)

Another album I love from 1989 is Lou Reed’s New York. I remember taking a break from studying for the leaving and listening to it while reading the Bonfire of the Vanities and thinking how fucked up America is, full of greed and self interest. Look at it now.

Amen to that. Second Coming was superb. Got panned because the first one set the tone for a new generation. How the fuck can anyone do that twice? Music on it is superb.

Who’d have thought that it would be Ian Brown who marched on as a musician when it all went tits up?

The Seahorses looked to have something about them when they first hit the scene. I reckon it was Squire wanting to be the next Jimi Hendrix that fooked them up.

The Seahorses were quality alright.

Disappeared up their own arses though, could have been superb.

Have to say I always thought the Stone Roses’ first album was a little bit over-rated. It’s definitely a good album alright but patchy IMO. Some of the praise it has got over the years would have you thinking it was the greatest of all-time or something which it is very far from. Would only rank it as having maybe four really good songs (I am the Resurrection, Waterfall, This is the One, I Wanna Be Adored). Never thought that She Bangs the Drums or Made of Stone were that great. Fair bit of filler in the middle part. Don’t get me wrong I like the Roses just felt that some of the praise they got was a bit over the top. Superb musicians alright - Reni was a great drummer and Mani a great bassist but Squire was a bit too much of a guitar solo fetishist for my liking and once he left the Roses came out with some awful crap. I like Brown’s solo stuff.

Always preferred the Happy Mondays. Bummed and Pills N Thrills N Bellyaches are better albums for me. The Cure’s Disintegration is the album from that time that I’d really look back on as having stood the test of time.

The Pixies were a band who I never really “got”.

Edit: Lads you have to be joking about the Seahorses. They were appalling.

No one “gets” the Pixies, you just listen to it, rejoice in it and walk away completely confused. I mean, does anyone, anyone know what any Pixies songs are about?
