2012 Olympics

Apparently there’s only 1324 days to go till this starts. Was on the BBC website for the first time in a while and they actually have a section for the Olympics already - pretty sad. They’ve even set up a webcam for “The Olympic Park” which is basically a building site (http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/webcams/2012_webcam1.shtml). What a sad set of individuals our counterparts across the water seem to be.

its going here too in certain sectors as well Mac. There is a shitload of work to be done for it all, and it looks like they’ll be sruggling to complete on time, much like every other one so far. Building a 4bn shopping centre by the site too, and the Olympic village is costing around 13bn, but Lend Lease who are doing it arent exactly in the best position right now. some money been thrown at the thing.

Sad bastards alright. Were you around when we held that similarly important affair - The Ryder Cup? It’s not like we hyped it up or anything.

Bo-Sco.

Over in London they’re already saying they’ve run out of money and Central Government will have to step in.

However commentry is largely occupied with falling land values being the cause for the shortfall. But to be honest London is in a jock as it is.

Brand new Max Azaria Boots DISTROYED; fucking pavements are in flitters. I’m not exaggerating. There is no one sq.m of pavement from Leicester Square to Marble Arch that hasn’t loose or broken slabs. And you’ll walk at least 500m before you’ll find a litter bin.

Next time ye see a pic of Peaches or Posh “falling down drunk” forget it, its the fucking footpath ate’in the stillettos.

All around the London Eye needs attention, the flooding and rubbish is Clonmel’esq and the traffic around Hyde park would be Parisien only for the lorries, buses, diggers, holes in the ground, vans, more buses and more lorries, more road works. Its endless.

I’m sure Boris Johnson will sort those issues out Mire.

Speaking of the british government, did anyone hear Gordon Brown yesterday? He was trying to say ‘we are trying to save the banks’ or something along those lines but came up with ‘we are trying to save the world’. haha good man Gordon.

DETAILS OF THE route to be taken by the Olympic torch when it passes through Ireland en route to the London 2012 games have been confirmed.

The flame will come to this country on June 6 next year, making a one-day detour during its trip around the North. It will then continue its journey around the UK before the games’ official opening ceremony on July 27.

A spokesperson for the Olympic Committee of Ireland has confirmed to TheJournal.ie that the torch’s visit to the Republic will begin with a symbolic crossing of the border at Newry, to celebrate “14 years of peace” in Northern Ireland. It will then travel to the Olympic Committee of Ireland headquarters in Howth before heading to Dublin city centre.

First the flame will be taken to Croke Park, where it will be abseiled from the stadium roof to the pitch. It will then go to the Garden of Remembrance in Parnell Square before heading down O’Connell Street towards the IFSC and out into the Sheriff Street area. After crossing the river via the new Samuel Beckett bridge, it will pass Government Buildings and go out across the south side towards Harold’s Cross.

The flame will then return to the city centre via Clanbrassil Street, Patrick Street, and Dame Street with a public celebration.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, OCI president Pat Hickey said the flame would not be travelling around the country outside Dublin due to time limitations. “We’re limited to x amount of hours when it comes down here,” he said. “What we’re going to do is try and embrace people from around the country, who can run with the torch for a leg in Dublin.”

An OCI spokesperson said 50 to 60 people would be selected to run with the flame, drawn from the sporting world and the general public. He added that International Olympic Committee rules forbid any politicians or their family members from running with the torch.

The route is currently waiting for final confirmation from the London authorities. Details do not appear to have reached the official London 2012 website – a map of planned destinations does not include anywhere in Ireland.

Wont be the first time someone runs down Sheriff Street with a flaming torch.

Limerick’s Grainne Murphy has qualified for the Olympics

Just reading about Ciaran Behan, who qualified yesterday. He’ll be Irelands 2nd ever gymnast to compete at the Olympics. Has had a fair share of obstacles to overcome.

He had a benign tumour removed from his thigh when he was younger. During the operation the nerves in his legs were damaged which left him consigned to a wheelchair as a child. He managed to recover and returned to gymnastics but suffered brain damage after some accident on a high bar. He ended up in a wheelchair again and had to learn everything from scratch during his rehab process. Then he suffered 2 ruptured cruciate ligaments which he’s recovered from.

The lad is only 22 still! He was on the radio this morning. Sounds very like Kevin Kilbane. His parents are from Dublin and Monaghan. He sounds like a genuine alright sort.

That has Hollywood blockbuster written all over it. Best of luck to Ciaran

Great story and fair play to him. For what its worth, his name is Kieran btw.
