Is it because he has poor skills and no eye for the ball?
Callanan played three games this year and got a nomination for hurler of the year, Canning played 7 and didnāt even get an All Star. How is Canning possibly better than Callanan at the moment?
Iām not saying meehan was better than him, but he based the superiority solely on all irelands which was ridiculous
Iād say thats what he used to justify it, but the sun shone out of only one place for Jack and it was natural enough that he believed that, Declan won him many a game. Iād say he rated Meehan very very highly, but when asked to choose, there was only ever going to be one answer.
Just in from the pub. Thought lally played well at cb until he went off. Galway list their shape after a few injuries. Great work from both teams shown I thought. Tough game. Nothing much to be learned from it bar young cooney wintered well.
Not at all.
Parnell Park is a horrible cunt of a place at all times.
Jesus you were serious. Canning was the top scorer in the championship, from play and placed balls, he was without a doubt galways best forward last year and it was a joke he didnāt get an all star ahead of everyone else really, if you are basing it on all stars your argument is built on sand. Callinan went to town on a one legged richie mccarthy and on padraig mannion. The limerick performance was part of a blowout, he was brilliant against us but weāve long lacked a shutdown back in the full back line. Against waterford however, when callinan was double marked and received the attention canning always receives (and did again tonight for example) callinan was invisible. Canning is always the focus of attention, and often of additional marking, yet usually performs. Swap canning for reid on that kilkenny team and you think itād be weakened? I donāt
true but he wasnāt asked necessarily, he included it in his book to try and to erase a black mark from the career of his clearly illegitimate son declan. Iām just using it to illustrate the āhe never won all irelands so canāt be as good as some hacker that has 3ā reasoning you still hear from roasters. Perhaps I should have picked a better example.
Daithi Regan was a better hurler than what Joe Canning is now.
Heās Galwayās best forward, fair play to him. Given Galway played way more games than any other good team it would be a tad weird if their best forward wasnāt the top scorer in the championship. Callanan scored 5-6 from play in three games this year. I donāt have Joe Canningās stats but if he scored 7 points on average from play per game Iād be surprised. If Tippās opposition last year wasnāt good enough how about we go back a year and look where he scored 2-5 from play in two games marking probably the best defender of all time. And to suggest that Canning gets the same treatment in every game as Callanan did against Waterford is just fucking hilarious. Not that I think Canning is a bad hurler or anything, probably top five in the country
I think it was an isolated john Hanbury who was left marking Callinan last year.
Callinan would destroy most people in those situations.
Canning is an outstanding hurler, but there are a few of them about.
I think galway will go well this year, but all any team bar kk can a hope for is to be competitive.
cough
ah here. callinan is a good player, but needs space, his main move is to knock the ball into the few yards tipp leave free in front of him then use his speed and skill to get on it and do something, waterford took that away and he was at sea. canning might never win an all ireland but hes top class
Canning is unique in that he has all the skills of the highest level players, but also the ability to do something outrageous like the goal in the drawn final of 2012, or the goal last year. Galway havenāt been good enough to win an AI during his time so far, itās as simple as that, close in 2012 and 2015, but couldnāt finish the job. An argument can be made that if he is as good as some believe, he should be dragging his team over the finish line, but I think a better argument is that hurling is a 15/20 man game and Galway just havenāt had the strength across all the lines as most AI winners have.
No, it was P. Mannion for the 3 goals. Hansbury went on him near the finish and prevented him scoring another goal by upending him, and not bringing him safely back to the ground, provoking endless shrieking from that hurling expert COTY candidate from Tipp.
He is top class, Iāve said that. I also donāt think it matters whether he wins an All Ireland or not as Iāve also already said. A major reason Callanan can get so much space is because of his great pace and movement. Canning often goes out of games when left in full forward as he doesnāt have the speed or movement to give an option. No full forward would do well against Waterford, TJ Reid got a goal in there as a result of a mix up between two players when de Burca was about to catch an easy ball but thatās the only way a full forward can get anything against that system. Tipp could have brought Callanan further out the field as Galway probably would have with Canning but we never looked like losing the game so it wasnāt needed.
Ah here, Joe Canning could retire in the morning and heād be remembered as one of the best players of his era. Heād get on every team in the country, if media darling Shefflin had to pretty much carry Galway on his back from the age of 20 or 21 I donāt think heād have any AI medals either.
Unless Canning scores 2-09 in every game he gets scrutinised. Personally I think the lad gets a very unfair time in the media, always the fall guy when Galway lose. Loughnane in particular has it in for him.
Without reopening that whole bloody Declan Browne debate that nearly brought the destruction of TFK a while back, some of the best players who played the game never won provincial medals, not to mind AIās.
Not having an AI medal is no stick to beat a player with really, especially a top player like canning. Youād wonder why he bothers when he is a class player but just gets constant criticism whenever they lose.
Canning is the Steven Gerrard of hurling.
Is he banging Rachel Wyse?
