2016 Bord Gáis Energy Under 21 Hurling Championship

Fuck off. What was sexist?

For a few years up to 2009, the U21 final was the curtain raiser to the Camogie Final.

Terraces must take at least 15k each.

Then Clare won it and the sponsors came running. What’s good for Clare is good for hurling.

The camogie was the curtain raiser in 2009.

Ya they must do going by those numbers alright. They don’t look like they do though but I’ve been wrong a couple of times before.

Semple Stadium like other grounds has had its capacity downgraded over the years.

60k was the capacity when the current incarnation was built in the early 80s but that was downgraded to 57k and then 54k by the late 90s. Current capacity is 53k and judging by the trend attendance-wise in provincial championships that’s unlikely to be tested any time soon.

True ; TBH even a Q/f double bill hasn’t nearly tested it . What was the biggest Q/f attendance in Thurles ???

Dumb post rating

I don’t know, possibly 2012, but I would be surprised if any quarter-final bills there got over 40k.

From memory the 2006 Munster final is the last time a capacity or close to capacity crowd attended the stadium.

The place was overfull that day, i can’t remember being in a stadium as uncomfortably wedged.

There was 53k at that game, there was believed to be 60k at the drawn 1987 Munster final there as the gates were broken in.

Ya : Would a proper Munster final even fill it now ??? I doubt it .

The New Stand & Old Stand due to upgrades probably hold less these days than in 1987.

Perhaps by a few hundred but the capacity was mostly downgraded during the 90s to 54k which is almost the same as the current capacity.

I would reckon a good share more tbh. Most of the lower level stand seats back then were simply concrete blocks numbered. There was no space between patrons like there is today in modern Stand seats.

I remember being carried across the terrace in the surge after Nicky kicked “that” goal. Was absolutely wedged.
Some knackers following Cork back then.

Wouldn’t be like Limerick people to jump on a hurling bandwagon.
