Presumably Dillon and Barry Moran will call it a day now, seen very little action this year and now both in their 30s. Maybe Cafferkey as well.
Apart from that Iād expect the rest back next year.
Next year theyāll have Clarke and Moran (34), Higgins (33), Boyle (32), Barrett and SOS (31) and Parsons (30). Thatās nearly half a team over 30 if you use the same starting XV as yesterday. Thereās a very short finite lifespan on this team. Itās hard to see the likes of Higgins, Moran and Boyle having seasons like they did this year again and there doesnāt seem to be the players to come in.
Dublin have began phasing their 30+ out of the starting team. Brogan, Flynn, McMenamin and MacAuley all starting on the bench this year.
I thought Philly McMahon looked past it yesterday, Iād say heās the next one to be pushed further to the sidelines.
I havenāt read the thread from yesterday so maybe this has been discussed but I canāt understand why COC didnāt put that ball down on the ground to kick it, I know he occasionally has a poor strike off the ground but the margin for error is much less.
He should have scored it whichever way. It was on the 21, 15/20 yards in. Any half decent free taker would knock it over. He missed a handy one 30 yards out fairly central too in the first half. Not a good free taker. And I may be old school, but I far prefer a free being struck off the ground than out of the hands.
Where does yesterday rank in terms of great finals, chaps? It had some mistakes and bad shooting but was full of quality, commitment, tension and bravery. It was absolutely gripping stuff. It lacked the fairytale ending for the perennial bridesmaids but I think it jumps ahead of Tyroneās 2005 and 2008 victories as regards my enjoyment of a final Iāve attended. It may be recency bias and I no longer have the photographic memory of my youth but it was truly epic. Elite football is vastly superior to what top level hurling has to offer and that was hammered home again yesterday in no uncertain terms. Unbelievable stuff. Iām still heart sore for Mayo today, even though I picked up a little bit when I saw Dara Calleary at Gillās corner after the game yesterday.
No trophies alright mate but at least they gave it a right go. Tyrone took one look at Dublin and lay back and let their belly be tickled for 75 minutes.
