Square ball according to reports. Donāt know if it was contentious or not.
It wasnāt. Correct call from what Iāve been told.
Yea heās great shot stopper, but not the most imposing goalie, always a bit of a worry with high balls. We could do a bit of work on our kick-outs too. Too many of them end up being 50-50 calls.
How did we play overall yesterday? Hearing some positive reports about the general set up, cohesion, style etc but that we missed a lot of chances.
Played well after the first 15 minutes, which were pretty dire. Definitely much better defensive set-up this year, sweeper in behind and half-backs expected to chase back. Two man full forward line. Seem to be trying to carry the ball from deep, with men following on the shoulder at pace for the off-load. The kind of system where your wing backs end up scoring a few points every game. Worked reasonably well. Shooting was atrociousness, lot a bad misses, especially two close in frees, which PJ missed. When Brosnon or Shanley return this should hopefully improve.
Having said all that, Iām still a bit worried about the trip to Leitrim next week. Could be a tricky one.
Next weekās fixtures
Saturday
Waterford vs Wicklow, Carriganore, 7pm
Sunday
Carlow v London, Netwatch Cullen Park, 1pm
Limerick v Westmeath, Gaelic Grounds, 2pm
Leitrim v Wexford, Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada, 2pm
Carlow and Waterford will be occupying the top two slots in the division before dessert is served for Sunday dinner.
Big game for Limerick this weekend. Need a win over Westmeath to stay in the promotion hunt. Team to be announced tonight.
The performance of the Wicklow footballers and their manager Johnny Magee was under scrutiny at their most recent county board meeting.
Rathnew chairman Bobby Dignam didnāt hold back when criticising Mageeās preparation for the opening game against Leitrim.
āI really just canāt figure out what we are going to do with the present set up. I watched a warm up that the likes of Dublin would do. Twenty minutes non stop running backwards and forwards across a pitch and then come out and run for 70 minutes on a heavy pitch. Itās not Dublin heās training, itās Wicklow,ā Dignam told county board delegates.
āAlso, the team selection. I canāt understand what heās doing. We had six senior players on the subs bench, two from Blessington, two from Patās and two from Bray. These men have played senior football in this county for the last ten years and theyāre not good enough to get on the county team.
āHonest to God, Chairman, itās so embarrassing to go up there, Iāve been at all the OāByrne Cup games bar and, I mean, there is no progress.ā
He added: āIāve been opposed to him for the length of term heās there and Iāll oppose him until heās gone.ā
County Board chairman Martin Coleman believes that there are a lot of young lads coming through and they need time.
āItās not an overnight process. Thereās a lot of young players coming through and we have to be patient and give them time. We havenāt the quality of players that we had eight or ten years ago.
Only in the GAA could preparing like the best, be seen as a bad thing
What does that even mean? If you play senior club you should play senior county? Or does he mean they played senior county for 10 years and should be undroppable? Either way
clearly someone with an axe to grind and not prepared to have any objectivity to it regardless of any sort of results or performances. Its not as if Wicklow have had any sort of underage players come through that should be making them better. Theyāve been shit all the way along and thus will be shit at senior. Its not exactly surprising to see.
I read it as there were lads from intermediate clubs chosen ahead of lads from senior clubs. Could be wrong though.
Iād say it was some rant
Rathnew lad was replaced by Magee as far as I know. Maybe thatās something to do with it. The county board refused to ratify him at the start of the year so it had to go to a vote of the club delegates so thereās obviously no love lost for him at the top table.
Their results have been pretty shit under Magee to be fair.
Bizarre logic, although Iāve heard similar in Limerick hurling about lads from non-traditional clubs
Iād say itās a countrywide phenomenon tbh. Itās absolutely fucking ridiculous.
Hoganstand.com predictions
Waterford v Wicklow, Carriganore, 7pm
After trouncing London last Sunday, Waterford have home advantage again when Wicklow come to visit Carriganore this weekend.
Wicklow were handed a 10-point defeat by Leitrim in round one and will require a complete turnaround from that display if they are to prevent the Deise men from booking a second win.
Verdict: Waterford
Carlow v London, Netwatch Cullen Park, 1pm
Carlow turned some heads last weekend when they held Westmeath to a draw after a splendid contest in Mullingar and theyāre 1/8 favourites to book their first win against London on Sunday.
The Exiles were dismantled by Waterford in round one and face a tall order away to the Barrowsiders.
Verdict: Carlow
Limerick v Westmeath, Gaelic Grounds, 2pm
Two of Division 4ās promotion hopefuls go head-to-head at the Gaelic Grounds this weekend and itās a close one to call.
Westmeath will feel they underperformed against Carlow the last day and a marked improvement should be enough against the Shannonsiders.
Verdict: Westmeath
Leitrim v Wexford, Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada, 2pm
Both of these sides secured comfortable wins in round one and the winners of Sundayās clash in Carrick-on-Shannon will be taking a huge step in the right direction.
Bookmakers have priced Wexford at around 4/7 to secure their second consecutive win and with experience up front in the form of PJ Banville and Ciaran Lyng they should have enough to do so.
Verdict: Wexford
