2018 All Ireland Senior Football Championship

No word but I would expect extended playing time for the likes of Armstrong, Varley, O Donnell and the Sweeneys

They have, and Iā€™d say both Monaghan and Galway would bite your hand off for a final appearance this year. With the Super 8s introduced the chance of catching Dublin off-guard in a semi final is gone anyway. When last has a team that created a big surprise in a semi final won the final?

Have they?

What games in particular?

My thinking is they have less time to analyze you. Their experience too is massive in finals. Galway may have to lose one to win one if they meet Dublin. However they may slip them in a semi with somewhat less pressure

Iā€™m having some laugh listening to Monaghan, Galway and Tyrone fans saying theyā€™d rather play Dublin in a semi final than a final. Have any of those sides made a final in this decade years? When was the last time they even beat Dublin in championship? If Galway throw this game to play Dublin in the semi final theyā€™ll get their absolute holes opened in the semi final. Bizarre logic.

holes

Not with 15 minutes to go but Monaghan will have to go hell-for-leather do-or-die in the 2nd half and if Monaghan draw level with say 5 minutes to go I can see the whole thing suddenly going dead.

Iā€™ve my ticket got and Iā€™m staying in a hostel in Galway Saturday night. After Kerry I thought we were finished, now Iā€™ve gotten over the disappointment of that Iā€™m at least up for a fight with these Westies. Thereā€™s no consensus in the county. Thereā€™s some men think we will do it and others like @Chucks_Nwoko. It will basically be the greatest Monaghan moment in 80 years if they get a result and nothing really to lose.

There is actually plenty logic to it.

If you give Dublin more to look at about ypu then you reduce your chances of winning. They have huge resources and advantages that may be cut minimally by meeting them earlier

True but theyā€™re already doing that analysis and most likely have it done

But what about the opponents chance to prepare for Dublin, who present a different challenge than all other opposition? As Dublin are probably the most talented, experienced and physically well prepared outfit in the championship Iā€™d imagine opponents would be more worried about having 7 days to prepare for them than vice versa.

Donegal beating Dublin in 2014.

They lost to Kerry in the 2014 final

Donegal were beaten by Kerry in the 2014 final, after doing the hard work for Kerry by beating Dublin. Mayo similar in 2012. Meath in 2001. To cause a big upset in a semi final and get a similar level of performance in a final is incredibly difficult.

Ah right, thought they beat the Dubs in the semi and then Mayo in the final.

Dublinā€™s three exits from the championship this decade were all in the semi final.

How many All-Ireland football semi-final results in history have been genuine ā€œbig surprisesā€?

Very few, I would say.

Donegal v Dublin was a big surprise but Donegal had won the All-Ireland in devastating fashion just two years previously, so it probably shouldnā€™t have been that big a surprise.

Mayo beating Dublin in 2012 was a surprise according to the bookies but it wasnā€™t a surprise to those who had been monitoring the respective performances of Dublin and Mayo that year.

Mayo beating Dublin in 2006 was a surprise, but again, should it have been? That Mayo team had already reached a final while Dublin hadnā€™t.

Meath beating Kerry in 2001 wasnā€™t a surprise - the game was rated as a toss-up beforehand. The margin and the manner of it was obviously a big surprise.

Some of it. But 6 dys is crammed and it forces you to just worry about yourself.

Thatā€™s where dubs might be slightly (and itā€™s only slightly) open to something left field

Yea but theyā€™re paying fuck all attention to this weekend, ergo 3 til the next one where theyā€™ve a fair idea who they were gonna have.

Good point.

Galway are fucked.

But how much effort can you make 6 days out from a semi final when you are are ready there.

Bust a gut and lose and you will lose likely be hammered. Play alot of 2nd string and lose but be fresh.

On reflection. Considering the semi opposition and the fact they have a huge game this weekend as well I think Galway have to go full strength and win. Take their chances in the final

Absolutely

Galway will bate Dublin in the final just to rub Mayoā€™s nose in it like they did in 98
