Big loss . His pace will trouble any defence .
Yes, he’s a very important and underrated player for Galway along with Heaney.
Nonsense. Those days are gone
Ex-Mayo manager James Horan feels it’s rare that former Tyrone star Sean Cavanagh has anything good to say about his native county.
Horan was referring recent comments from Cavanagh on The Sunday Game preview show where the three-time All-Ireland winner said he was “starting to see the end of the road of this great Mayo side”.
Writing in his column for the Irish Daily Star today, Horan took notice of the comments from the Moy man when previewing this Sunday’s crunch Connacht SFC quarter-final between Mayo and Galway in Castlebar.
“This is as big a game as between Mayo and Galway as there’s been in a long, long time,” Horan wrote.
"For the loser, it’s a tough battle to get to the All-Ireland quarter-final stage. Remember, this year, it’s an open draw in the qualifiers, there’s no divide into A and B. So Sunday’s loser could be faced with a trip to Omagh or Clones.
"Whoever wins on Sunday, though, will be very, very confident of being part of the Super 8s. It’s also the case that the Connacht championship really matters to everyone.
“Sean Cavanagh had his say in an RTE studio on Sunday, declaring that Mayo are no longer contenders. I can’t remember the last time Sean had anything good to say about Mayo, so it was no surprise. But that bunch of Mayo players still have plenty left in the tank.”
Nah they’re not mate. The media would have you believe they are but the league isn’t worth a fuck when it comes to championship
Media?
Fuck them.
I talk to players and many would say league if not more important certainly more enjoyable than championship
The League is even more crucial than before with the super 8s.
I knew you’d come back with either “talk to” or “know” someone or other.
Anyway I’m not on about whether it’s more enjoyable or not. I’m saying disregard it as a formguide.
Ffs. Your telling me if a county comes along finds a few new players in the league that are clearly an improvement on what played for them the previous year you simply disregard it becuase it was the league?
No I’m not telling you that. That has always been the case
Amateur hour analysis from you. You can’t take everything that happens in the league for face value obviously but you always see little clues for championship. Only a fool would disregard it.
Been a good few years since I had a losing summer punting on GAA and I’ll stick with the system I have which disregards league form.
If you or anyone else want to take heed of it, go ahead.
Look at David Jennings analysis of New York vs Leitrim in the RP last Sunday as a prime example of reading too much into league form.
You don’t care what players think???
Not particularly, no. Why would I ?
What did he make of New York’s league form?
Yeah. But Keegan will be a massive loss and some of the others might not be at full speed yet. It took them a while to get going last year. Just not sure they’ll be able to hit the ground running. The fact that they’re playing Galway might actually help them get going.
I’ve half a mind to stick a tenner on Dublin to win this out.
Christ
To be fair to them they’ve hit the ground running in recent years. The last time they lost their opening match must be at least 8 or 9 years ago.
In their two Connacht defeats to Galway ('16 & '17) Mayo hit a paltry 28% (0-11 from 38) on point attempts from play. 28%!! That’s approx. 0-07 less than the average for those shots. Via dontfoul
