2019 Masters Tournament

The broom handled putter is banned. Why not the broom handled spine
You fools.

Both of those are still legal, mate.

As if I care

Must be the masters then I heard, not major

Correct. Remarkably Nicklaus finished tied for 6th in 1998 at age 58.

Testament to the mediocrity of modern golf that Tiger a fused together has been can win a major playing badly.

Theres hope for you yet so…

Like the last days of Kilkenny’s Empire when Cody would throw Mick Fennelly together in a shed for a couple of games and they’d still win.

I was only thinking the same thing. If/when KK win the AI this year it’ll be up there with Woods winning in Augusta

And yet McIlcunt drags his hole around all weekend in ignominy.

Great days.

the good thing about Augusta is it’s the one major that allows you to accurately judge past performance, the course hasn’t changed that much since Niklaus and the boys were in their prime.

Tigers winning score in 2019 would have got the job done in 75 of the 85 years since the first masters

The names that have scored lower than 275 in those years.

Hogan (-14), Niklaus (-17), Floyd (-17), Crenshaw (-14), Woods (-18 & -16), Mickelson (-16), Schwartzel (-14), Spieth (-18) and Reed (-15)

This was not a mediocre masters.

That’s a pretty glib analysis and ignores the impact of climate and technology. It was the softest masters I can remember in terms of weather with no wind to speak of and the soft underfoot conditions making putting a relative doddle

the technology argument is pretty flimsy. The scoring average has remained pretty much the same since the war. You still need to hit a small ball with a stick.

Woods wasn’t far off his peak, he hit 58 GIR, when he was in his pomp he hit 59 GIR. His iron play was back to his spectacular best.

The weather may have made for more receptive greens but it also meant the ball wasn’t rolling on the fairways as much as it can. Meaning one, maybe two clubs longer into most of the greens.

Amazing the lengths some people will go to, to undermine great sporting achievements

The balls and the sticks have remained pretty much the same since the war? Which war is this?

Two unicorns in one year. Imagine it!

World War 2.

The balls and sticks have changed drastically but the scoring has remained pretty much the same. They still haven’t figured out a club/ball combo that will hit the ball straight if you put a bad swing on it.

You would have to think that if Mcilroy was going to win it that this would have been the year. With the rain blowing up from the gulf port and New Orleans conditions were soft which would have suited the big hitters. Greens were as slow as they were ever going to be and he was coming in on a rich vein of form. I just don’t think he possesses the imagination to do what Tiger or Poulter did on the nineth green or the wedge play to make him a masters champion. Augusta is not a course you can over power. It could be just a case that the course doesn’t suit him. He invariably puts together a very good round on one of 4 days but in reality you need 3 good rounds with a solid 4th.

Mcilroy will win one in the fashion spieth won it. Total destroy the course and win by five or six shots. He simply can’t play smart golf or eyeball an opponent. Molinari holed for birdie on the 8th maybe and tiger had a ten footer and rolls it in. Rory just can’t do that. Even in round one. He’s on the 17th one under and he goes for crazy shots and ends up one over. Tiger plays smart golf.

They have figured out a club/ball combo that will allow you to hit the ball much further if you do manage to hit it straight. Granted they have been trying to limit the impact by lengthening holes but there are limited to what they can do here. Very obvious on the par 5s

You’d expect the scores to be drastically lower then, but they aren’t. Augusta’s defence is it’s greens. No matter how long you hit it, if you land it the wrong side of a ridge or over the back on a drop off, you’re scrambling to make par.

The one thing I’d agree with you that is mediocre is the wedge play. Modern players have lot’s more choice with wedges and loft and spin, but they wouldn’t hold a candle to some of the older lads who used to get it round with wedges like spoons and fuck all spin.
