Iâm not sure you can excuse some of the Limerick filth on the basis nobody was badly injured. Only one player has been badly hurt by a Dublin player in recent years.

The John Small incident was unfortunate and a red card but he along with a few more Dublin players like McMahon, McCarthy and Cooper seem to be vilified as âscumbagsâ and âknackersâ based on where they come from more than anything else. Thereâs a real âclassâ element to it.
It was the same back in the 1980âs where Paidi OâSe was as âtough as nailsâ whereas Ciaran Duff and Brian Mullins were seen as âscumbagsâ.

Itâs very much the Ballymun/Northside Dublin thing. Incidentally Iâd say Cooper is dirtier in the real sense than the others, heâs cynical as fuck but smart with it. Philly can be dirty alright but itâs his general cocky demeanour which winds people up most. Davy Byrne is a bit of a headcase alright.
Francie Bellew broke Mickey Lindenâs jaw and knocked out a load of teeth but I never considered Francie a dirty player. He was hard and agricultural but he wasnât dirty and he wasnât sneaky.
When Connolly and Keegan used be going at it, Connolly was the âscumbagâ whereas Keegan âplayed on the edgeâ.
