Woolie complaining about teams getting a free shot for a mark like that, I donât see any problem with it at all. If the defending team are so negative that they bring everyone back to within 30 yards of the goal then itâs perfectly fine that the attacking team have a way of countering that. I still donât understand how coaches canât create more of these attacking mark scenarios, might be a low percentage shot from Hughes but when 8-9 points win many games now itâs surely worth a go.
Iâd agree but to be fair to Colm heâs one of the modern games Greatest thinkers so you canât be hard on him for trying to evolve the game into a better spectacle
After my lift to Newry let me down, i had to make do with the less glamorous Munster Club Football tie between Clonmel Commercials and Newcastlewest today.
I was at the corresponding fixture last year which was a great contest, but unfortunately today didnt reach the same heights. It was the type of game that if you were watching on a stream would probably say was a load of shite, but at least when your there, it does seem somewhat important and enjoyable. I get a great kick out of attending live knockout sport.
Clonmel started well and had a well taken goal by Sean OâConnor followed by a lovely left footed score from Colman Kennedy. It looked to be only going one way, but NCW dug in and took over for most of the rest of the half. They scored the next three points and missed a few more so should have hit the front before half time. Clonmel had a harsh enough black card during this period and on 28 minutes my accomplice for the day (who had backed Clonmel -4) turned to me and said âits happening again isnt it?â. The pressure on Clonmel to deliver in Munster this year is serious and they werent handling it too well. Billionaire businessman and well known Racehorse Owner Brian Acheson was in attendance and looking anxious. Heâs providing significant financial backing to this project. (Oisin McConville isnt coming down from Crossmaglen for the fun of it).
Anyway a Kevin Fahey point on the stroke of HT settled Clonmel and they went in 1-02 to 0-03 in front. They played a more controlled brand of football in the second half and looked comfortable enough for the most part. A breakaway goal from Peter McGarry sealing the win. Newcastlewest ran out of ideas the longer it went on and really missed Cian Sheehan and Ian Corbett from last year. Once robust centre back James Kellyâs race was run on 48 minutes that was that.
Overall i wasnt that enthused by Commercials. Yes they won, but they very well had to. I dont think theyâve the bouldness in them. It was funny after the black card for the next kick out, goalkeeper Michael OâReilly did a very half hearted Evan Comerford attempt at running the clock down. It was such a half hearted, timid effort, the whole place started laughing and he had to sheepishly get up and continue the game. Other than Seamus Kennedy who youâd go to war for every day, they lack the really big personalities. Quinlivan had some good moments but they dont know what to do with him. Sean OâConnor is their inside man, which leaves MQ floating between midfield and half forward. They should be building around him.
Anyway a grand way to pass an afternoon and i look forward to Dingle coming up in two weeks⌠You get a serious class of person in attendance at these games. Numbers might be low, but quality is high.
Presume Dingle will have to travel up the night before which wouldnt be ideal.
Thurles is also a slower pitch this time of the year to Pairc Ui Chaoimh which plays like a Flushing Meadows. That doesnât suit Clonmel but maybe it will cancel itself out v Dingle.
Wonder will Mark OâConnor be summoned back to Geelong for Pre Season this year after the Cats disappointing defence of their Premiership title.
@peddlerscross Will this failed lift character potentially put beat-by-beat Ulster Senior Club Championship final coverage at risk? Thatâd be a huge blow to the thread.
