2023 Club Championships

It’s a real shame. An absolute travesty in truth.

Must have been 40k + there in 2004.

What was there today? 12k?

Some going when you consider the majority of the players on three of those teams went to st pat’s, maghera…same for the dungiven and slaughtneil lads

Ballinderry beat Nemo in thurles after birr bet clarinbridge in hurling. Ballinderry and rathnew on a waterlogged pearse park Longford in the semis was proper winter football

Celtic tiger. Everyone was heading out drinking kopperberg pear and aftershock after it

Every great team or county surge can be traced back to an academy

Nursery pal nursery .

The club championship started to take off in the late 80s with Baltinglass, eire og and clann na Gael providing the storyline in football.

More due to TV coverage and the move to Paddy’s Day

It had stopped raining before throw in. Christ Dubliners and hurling knowledge

The more seasoned amongst us remember the mill up after final whistle blew between pats Maghera and magherafelt in the mcrory cup final of 1996. Made the rte news iirc

That was to replace the railway cup. The storylines pushed it into the limelight.

What was the last railway cup played on TV 17th march?

Conor Carville captained St Pats Maghera to the McRory and Hogan Cups in 2013.

A lot of those Glen lads have some medal collection now.

Late 80s, give or take

I never remember it anyway. Was it ever live?

Oh dear.

‘the Rebels’ struggled until half-time when they trailed by 2–4 to 1-1.
…:……:
The game had just restarted when players and spectators alike were startled by a ferocious clap of thunder. What followed was a thunderstorm of extraordinary proportions with thunder and lightning accompanying a heavy downpour. Conditions were so bad that spectators could not make out the identity of some of the players on the field. The spectators sitting in the open had to seek refuge from the elements at several stages throughout the second thirty minutes of play while the press box situated in the front row of the Cusack Stand also had to find alternative accommodation.
……
On the field of play the hurlers battled with the elements as well as with each other. So bad were the conditions that the dye from the players’ jerseys ran into their togs. ……might have got a touch on the sliothar; however, regardless of this the sides were level with just two minutes left in the game. Most agreed that a draw was now likely and, given the conditions that the game was played in, a draw would have been appropriate

Was I dreaming that the GAA said the club season had to be run off in the calender year ?

They will be once we get the All Ireland into June

Seriously, I thought they had?

Funnily enough i dont, and i was probably at it. St pats had a serious imaginary rivalry with st Mary’s, them being the grammar school- in reality st marys cared little about football and less about st pat’s…too busy worrying about getting into medicine or law, (accountancy not so much)
