perhaps a touch of that withJBM - was no tactical genius with Cork but he was JBM and that counted for a lot - in fact his tactics may have been to have no tactics at all other than to go out and hurl with freedom lads
He won a few minor all irelands and a senior with this approach and somehow nearly won 2013 with a bang average team
One thing that shows up the horrific general quality of coaching in Gaelic football is that basically no teams use the attacking mark as a tactic.
People might not like it - I hate it - but I find it baffling that teams don’t concentrate on racking up marks. I mean it’s a free shot at goal. In other words, it’s a free kick.
I’d say only Paddy Small and David Clifford have marked themselves out as “mark men”.
There was some comment about a mark Niall Grimley of Armagh took against Roscommon which wasn’t even awarded when it should have been.
I think the GAA are really missing out in their social media game. There should be a team of social media specialists (or even a clued in intern) putting together montages of skills, viral sort of content.
Where’s the montage of Waterford fist pumps over the years? That sort of stuff would go viral.
I’m going to have to do this myself, amn’t I?
I’m trying to think of song titles for a Duckworth-Lewis Method style GAA concept album.
But where’s the Golden Discs Christmas special compilation of GAA songs? Dancing At The Crossroads and Jimmy’s Winning Matches and Ooh Aah G Aaah Aaah and all the rest?
One of the Galway subs actually dived at his feet trying to block it. Think he probably got enough contact on Con’s standing leg to just put him off enough. He didn’t really catch it right.
PJ and JBM both have better hairlines than ZZ nothing on top. Hairline is a big thing for a GAA manager. It’s a mark of true GAA managerial greatness to be able to overcome a bad hairline.
In the elation of the full time whistle I was trying to figure who was it that put pressure on that shot. He’s such a big game player. Always reminds me of Lee Keegan, but maybe he’s an even bigger scoring threat than Lee.
Donegal will present a completely different challenge. One I think we could struggle with but we have fellas that can score points so we’ll be there with a chance at the death, bit of luck after that.
I think it came up earlier in the year that Joyce has a very strong record against Ulster teams, the number of different scoring threats they have makes it difficult enough for teams to know which fella to spend the day pulling and dragging. Armagh have given them most problems but generally that was self-inflicted, which isn’t beyond them on any given day.
If Walsh is fit it will be massive for them. At this stage I’d say they would be better forgetting about Kelly as even when he has been playing he has been ineffective.
In the fullness of time, that intervention may be up there with me man from Tyrone who made that overrated block. But it should be remembered, he did just about graze O Callaghan, and in truth, he should have kicked it quite easily.
