2024 Nations League B - Gameweek 1 - Ireland v England & Greece

Could give tax breaks like they do to those who whip horses

Lots of tax breaks for professional footballers who make it big.

Horse racing funding should be stopped anyway.

Bang on. Irish football is a disgrace. It treats kids like shit. I wouldn’t give them a penny.

Horse racing and greyhounds are a waste of money. Putting tax payer money into soccer is a waste of money also.

We should concentrate on finding the next o Donovan brothers or rhasidat adeleke.

Team sport funding where we can compete at world level like rubby (yes the glass ceiling of the rwc qfs) and the gaa for our cultural identity, grow the exposure outside of Ireland, the world needs to see hurling

This on the head. We have a load of lads playing gaa and soccer and the difference between the management of the players and teams is like chalk and cheese. The gaa model is all about player development moving kids up and down and long term strategy. The soccer is horribly short term dumping lads in an instance and taking in any mercenaries going. Funnily enough there’s coaches straddling both systems. Soccer lads just shrug their shoulders and say this is the way it is.

We hung on in the stadium for a while after and toddled out as English lads were released. An Irish group positioned themselves at the Chophouse chanting ‘ I I IRA’ as the English lads walked in direction of Baggot St laughing

I reckon in the brave new technical world of association football, Ireland is uniquely badly served of any country in Europe in terms of coaching because it has three major rival field sports. And those sports are better “got” and have genuine mass and grass roots appeal. This is the situation in no other country in Europe. Those field sports attract the middle and upper class (rugby) and the middle class and to an extent the aspirational working class (GAA). These are where your association football coaches at grass roots level come from in other countries. In Ireland they largely don’t. That’s a problem because that’s where the brains are.

You look at senior level coaches from other European countries bar Britain and they’re impressive individuals, obviously smart as hell, they’re people who could have been a success at most things they turned their hand to.

You look at the “top” coaches in this country and a lot of them come across like people you might expect to see shouting at immigrants by the canal. They come across like simpletons.

The Basque country produces Xabi Alonso and Mikel Arteta and that Iraola chap at Bournemouth. We produce Keeh Andrews and Keeh Treacy and Keeh Fahey.

If you have a manager who’s not a complete stiff, ie. somebody who doesn’t sound like they’re speaking through a foghorn and doesn’t talk like they have a speech impediment, expect to contend for the League Of Ireland title, and quickly.

Yeah the English I saw were slightly bemused or amused by it. A family of 4, Da Ma teenage kids had lads roaring in their face Lizzies in a box! They probably thinking these loons will be visiting us in Liverpool/ Manchester next week

No, clearly the FAI and soccer crowd have a proven track record of mismanagement of funds. Added to the fact without the english academy system we wouldnt have have the relevant success we have had. The LoL league is a basket case, dundalk were kingpins only a few years ago added to European appearances are going bust. What benefits will we get ploughing money into that black hole, where it’ll be a massive amount just to catch up let alone get ahead of relevant comparable nations.

Write off soccer, let it be a passtime. The Olympics was great, really good feeling after it on what has been achieved with a small budget.

Results (and performances) were crap and that’s all that matters.

Ultimately the problems in Irish football run far deeper than the managers in charge. We just aren’t producing young players with technical ability. Like the Olympics it’s all down to money and coaching. Our Olympics results improved with more funding. The same would happen with football if it was provided. We lag way behind in terms of number of coaches and facilities available. Despite the government spending a tax surplus like a drunken sailor.

We are producing more players than we used to, our u21 results have been good for a long time now but no stars coming through or those that we may have expected to be stars’ progress is completely halted once they get to their twenties
