Hard to tell from TV but Limerick seemed to have most of their 11 outfield players, in their half, stationed around the arc for the last play. To prevent the two pointer or make it as difficult an angle and distance as possible.
You’d wonder could Wexford have been braver and tried work a goal chance with most of the defenders out by the arc. There must have been space inside to exploit.
To be fair to the Wexford chap he connected well with it and it didn’t seem to miss by much.
So this is the point. They became so systemized by how they work a 2 point opportunity that a goal never came into it. I assume the strategy is to work a clear 2pt opportunity or draw a free to kick a 2pt free. Meanwhile, Limerick defend the arc like a rugby try line and don’t leave an inch of space free.
Better teams would spot that system vs system gets you so far and that you revert to creativity to fake a 2pt chance to create a goal chance. Not much chance of doing that in Division 4 though.
Sadly this is simply now they have been programmed to kick a single point, let alone a 2 pointer. They like the rest will have to unlearn it. Some won’t be able to or won’t want to because deep down they need the system.
