I think I know the answer here but what does Gillane have to do to surpass Eoin Kelly? Is he close? How close? How heavy do the weight of team achievements weigh.?
Which Eoin Kelly?
The Tipp wan
Different eras.
Both class.
Kelly was lethal.
Gillane can do it any which way you want.
No wrong answer.
I’d take our boy.
But saw enough of the other fella destroy us over the years. 2006 … 15 points i think.
Aaron is on the cusp of doing him on longevity I think. Physically, he’s outrageous.
I’d generally be against recency bias, but in Gillane and Clifford we have two men to the manor born. They’ll echo down through the ages.
- Eoin Kelly
- Aaron Gillane
Loaded question- Gillines tackling is on a different level to Kelly therefore always a better bet for team mate .
Two greats, I’d have either. Kelly edges it on his free taking.
Would Tipp of 2002 to 2007 won more matches with Gillane inside instead of Eoin Kelly?
Would Limerick of 2017 to 2026 have been a less successful team with Eoin Kelly in the full forward line instead of Gillane.
I’d say the answer to both is no and I don’t think one is a level above the other. Only thing I would say is that we haven’t seen much of Gillane in a side consistently on the back foot or lacking in other scoring options which makes it far harder for teams to negate his influence - while Kelly was pretty much a one man band in his pomp on a team in decline/rebuild with pretty average half backs and half forwards until the end of his career.
Totally different era for an inside forward now in terms of space allowed. Imagine Kelly had a 2 v 2 with not another player within 40 yards!!!
Two class acts.
Kelly had to carry a poor team on his back for about five years.
And if you threw them into a melting pot you’d get King Con .
Gillane or Seamus callanan is probably a better comparison for me.
another couple of years to go yet. Your comment reminded me of the time that Kev reckoned Declan Browne was better than Mattie Forde as he couldnt split them ability wise, so went for Browne who played intercounty for longer. Even tho he played a year less than Forde
I dunno. Kelly was an artist but he wasn’t fast.
Either is Gillane I would say.
I mean at the peak of their career. Injuries definitely diminished Eoin Kelly as time wore on. Gillane has had peaks and relative troughs in form but is the same player all along.
Fair point.
And?
