I have a daughter and Iāll support her in any decision she makes as an adult.
That implies that if your daughter was to find herself in either of the two unfortunate predicaments I mention above and was to decide to have an abortion, youād support her. In my view that would be the correct response both as a father and as a reasonable person.
But it flies directly in the face of your stated wish to retain the 8th Amendment.
I support the right of women to have an abortion up to a point where best medical practice decides that the foetus still has no sentience, whatever the circumstances.
Thatās my personal view, but we wonāt be voting on whether to introduce my personal view as the law here.
What were they?
What if she was under 18?
If I have time later I will try find the thread and bump it. I donāt want to derail this one.
Jesus I shudder to think of a world without me in it. Thank God.
Itās sad that both sides concentrate on the extremes here. @sidney talking about rape victims and @hbv talking about baby murder. Thin end of the wedge arguments from both. 95% of cases will involve neither late term abortions or rape. Whats the wanker law expression? 'Hard cases make bad law?
thereās no middle ground in this matter, murder is murder, is murder.
I would be in favour of giving the woman the right to choose to have an abortion in those instances. I am not in favour of the "uk style " abortion laws that they want to bring in.
The rape point is generally moot as rape victims are administerd with the morning after pill after the medical evidence is taken.
Generally speaking, Iām disappointed that thereās no wider discussion of the alternatives such as freely available morning after and contraceptive pills together with better education.
The definition of murder is the killing of a human being. Just when a foetus becomes human is part of the argument here.
Iāve already stated comprehensively my overall views on the overall issue.
In the absence of the more liberal abortion laws that I would like to see implemented (but which have no chance of being introduced), abortion is an issue in which hard cases must be considered in terms of framing any future legislation.
Refusal to consider hard cases and what happens when they arise makes bad law. That was shown clearly in the Savita case.
legalising paedophilia is next on the cards in Ireland the way the country is going, I warned about this last year, when the gays got their way
And yet for a man with such a considered view you feel the necessity to use such an extreme situation as the basis for your argument.
As always, the Limerick lads are talking the most sense here.
We have a moral obligation to help women who are suffering but not those using abortion as a form of contraception.
Well said, pal.
The gays had their way with you long before last year.
And it appears from art Foleyās comment that the rape clause is a non issue as they are already given the option of being administered the morning after pill.
What % of the women travelling to the uk for abortions are rape victims or suffering from fatal foetal abnormality?
