Abortion Referendum Thread

I still canā€™t decide

I donā€™t agree women who are raped should be mad carry a baby bug thatā€™s as far as I go

Itā€™s a horrible position to be in for those, but at the end of the day thereā€™s another human, an innocent party, who is denied the right to live.

Rape and medical problems for mothers are the nadir of pregnancy, but they make up a miniscule event of these. Itā€™s the perfectly healthy babies that would be denied the right to live year on year that is the crux of it for me and because of what? A child being too much of an inconvenience in the parentā€™s life, a situation brought about by the irresponsibility of the parents in the first place. There are plenty of loving families out there who love the chance to rare children but canā€™t. I would imagine many women (and men) will look back on abortions in years to come with deep regret.

I think the fact that there is a high chance of this happening is a very, very sad day for humanity - what values do people have towards life anymore?

Ooooooffffffffttttttttt

Some people clearly have no idea what the referendum is about.

Some people clearly have no idea what abortion means.

Quite the opposite in fact. I think there has been an over correction in the efforts to break free from the influence of the catholic church. Once the 8th is repealed we will probably be one of the most liberal countries in the world.

Nonsense. Thatā€™s all superficial.

Itā€™s all a show.

Day to day we are still a little toddler.

Divorce, gay marriage, abortion would suggest a liberal society alright.

Think weā€™re somewhere in the middle, a lot a people the other side of 50 still carrying a lot of conservative opinions from catholic indoctrination ā€¦ younger people are pushing the other way.

Why do ye assume liberal means mature???

@johnnysachs

Thatā€™s a ridiculous assumption

A lot of self proclaimed liberals are anything but liberal.

DS babies have every place in this debate.

countries with access to abortion have much lower number of DS births each year and in some cases No DS births. Imagine, Oireland will be different!

women will present to medical professionals claiming to be suicidal, maybe they will be suicidal or maybe they wont but the 12 week thing has no place in the debate if we wish to discuss this as rational adults. every pregnancy will be open to the option of abortion both sides of the 12 weeks. that is a fact.

Mature? - I only jumped in at the end where your man was talking about liberal society ā€¦

As the man says, for a long time we put our problems behind big walls and ignored them ā€” we are a bit better at dealing / facing issues but we still have a long way to go.

It seems to be the tone that permeates through this thread. That we have grown up and broken free from Catholic ideology and shame. The 2 seem inextricably linked i.e. we dont have myopic black and white views anymore and there has been an awakening to many different concepts such as gender fluidity, sexual orientation, lifestyle choices etc.

Wheres your evidence for Irish women currently presenting for abortion under current laws ā€œclaimingā€ to be suicidal that allows you to claim this will happen in the future under proposed laws.

Iā€™ll go out on a limb and suggest you have fuck all apart from bluster.

They are an incredible contradiction.

Iā€™m pretty sure being a true liberal involves accepting other view points

Fuck this thread.

The reality is not the same.

Do you form your world view from this place???:joy::joy::joy::joy::joy:

i have no evidence of something happening that is not allowed happen currently. mother of God.

90% of parents in Britain however who chose to get prenatal testing chose to terminate pregnancies when DS was detected. thats pretty much all babies. do you think the 90% of mothers who chose to abort that baby pre 12 weeks will not do so if they find out at 16 weeks or 20 weeks?
the mechanism will be in place for a mother to present as say suicidal and they will get a ticket for the abortion clinic waiting room

You intimated that the 12 week limit would be ignored by women claiming to be suicidal - you presented this as ā€œfactā€

Under current Irish law abortion is permitted if there is a risk to the mother due to suicide. There is no evidence this is being abused in any manner.

You shot your mouth off incorrectly. Iā€™d suggest your future lies not be so easily rebutted.
