Abortion - Yay or Nay? Labane and Sid talk American politics, Codegreen ponders on the cost

The legal shambles is the result of 20 years of inaction by successive governments since the supreme court ruled in 1992. Doctors are in the impossible position where to terminate a pregnancy according to the 1861 law (which is still on the statute books) can potentially lead to a lifetime sentence. There is no law that states they can perform a termination to save the life of the mother, this was a supreme court decision in one case that was never subsequently legislated on by 6 (now 7) successive governments.
If the inquiry shows that this woman could have been saved by terminating the pregancy and this was not done due to confusion on the law, then the ones solely to blame are the spineless gutless politicians who refuse to lead even when the supreme court demands that they lead. These are the same inept clowns who were responsible for the safety of the most vulnerable in society since the formation of the state, failed utterly and were never held to account. Gombeen wankers the lot of them.

Anone remember what we talked about on the news before we heard of Savita? Are we still bankrupt, how is Sean Quinn doing? Anyone? Bueller?

If we are going to legislate that it’s OK for parents to kill their children, then surely, in the name of equality, we should also be talking about making it OK for kids to kill their parents. My father brought me nothing but misery before he moved out of the family home. I’d like to be able to kill him without any legal repercussions.

Obviously this facility should not be available to adopted children.

You sure your name should not be Michael Slong :strokechin:

We could put you out of your misery?

Prime Time interview with Savita’s husband on now. Harrowing stuff.

Martin o’neill doesn’t give a fuck for the life of the unborn child. However he cares even less for the life of the mother of the child. How do you legislate for a prick like that?

Could some kind soul please summarise what’s happening with regard to the inquiry into the lady’s death in Galway?

Did the government pick an Indian lad to lead up the inquiry in an atttempt to pacify the family?

The HSE followed by the government made a sows ear of it and are being giving plenty of shit and seem not to have to decided to cop the fuck on. That would be about the size of it.

They picked an Indian, but also included 3 doctors from Galway on the panel to enquire into Galway. This caused annoyance to the husband, he said he didn’t want galway to have any say in the enquiry. So they booted off the three galway doctors and brought in 3 more doctors from around the country and the uk.

The husband says he still won’t cooperate with the enquiry as he wants it to be a full public enquiry as opposed to a HSE one. Enda Kenny pleaded with him to cooperate, he said no. etc etc. James Reilly says the HSE enquiry is going ahead regardless.

they would have bene better off getting the sawdoctors to represent Galway

In my experience Indians are a pushy race with a sense of self entitlement that would make the average Scouser blush. This guy seems to expect to get better treatment from the HSE than any Irish person would get. Maybe he just won’t accept the same shit that we get thrown at us.

So you accept shit being thrown at you?

A month later and they announce that the X Case is to be legislated for. Did that really have to take 20 years?

The Master of the Rotunda Maternity Hospital has said six pregnancies were terminated at the hospital last year in order to save the life of the mother.

The Catholic Church talking about morals!?!

he Catholic bishops have described proposed abortion legislation published by the Government this week as “morally unacceptable”.
In a statement issued today, the bishops said Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill 2013, if approved, would make the “direct and intentional killing of unborn children lawful in Ireland”.
“The Bill as outlined represents a dramatic and morally unacceptable change to Irish law and is unnecessary to ensure that women receive the life-saving treatment they need during pregnancy,” the statement added.
It said the bill appeared to impose “a duty on Catholic hospitals to provide abortions.
“This would be totally unacceptable and has serious implications for the existing legal and Constitutional arrangements that respect the legitimate autonomy and religious ethos of faith-based institutions. It would also pose serious difficulties for the conscientious beliefs of many citizens”.
The Bill was published late on Tuesday night after intense discussions between the coalition parties Fine Gael and Labour.
The proposals, if enacted, will legislate for the 1992 X case judgment from the Supreme Court which found abortion is legal if there is a real and substantial risk to the life of the mother, including emergency medical cases, non-emergency medical cases and the threat of suicide.
The bishops said their statement was a preliminary response to hugely contentious reforms and they also raised concerns that an abortion could be carried out in a Catholic hospital.
“We encourage a deeper understanding of the inviolability of the right to life of both a mother and her unborn child, in all circumstances. Accordingly, at this crucial time, it is essential that all who share these beliefs make them clear to their legislators,” they said.
“The bill also appears to impose a duty on Catholic hospitals to provide abortions. This would be totally unacceptable and has serious implications for the existing legal and constitutional arrangements that respect the legitimate autonomy and religious ethos of faith-based institutions. It would also pose serious difficulties for the conscientious beliefs of many citizens.”
There is a clause in the Bill allowing for medical staff to have conscientious objection to carrying out an abortion.
“Abortion, in the sense of directly killing the unborn child, is never a remedy for suicidal ideation and therefore should never be cited as a justification for the direct killing of an innocent human being,” the bishops said.
“It is a tragic moment for Irish society when we regard the deliberate destruction of a completely innocent person as an acceptable response to the threat of the preventable death of another person.”
