Sad to report the type of news that will trouble all tennis lovers. One of the competitors in the Gentleman Singles competition has brought the game into the gravest of disrepute with his disgraceful behaviour.
Fabio Fognini slammed Wimbledonâs traditions after crashing out at SW19, claiming the All England Club banned him from show courts because of his fiery temper.
The unrepentant Italian refused to curb his hot-headed approach in the wake of his five-set defeat to 20th seed Kevin Anderson on Friday.
The 16th seed questioned Wimbledon bossesâ decision to schedule his clash with South African Anderson on Court Number 17, suggesting his first-round fine for threatening officials was to blame.
Fognini was fined ÂŁ27,500 for abusing official Wayne McEwen in his first-round victory over American Alex Kuznetsov.
âI think so, yeah, but it doesnât matter,â said Fognini when asked if his third-round clash should have been on a bigger court.
'They make the schedule and it doesnât matter.
'Itâs strange because in the first round against a qualifier I play on Court Number 18 - today I am 16 and he is 20 and we play on Court 17.
'But I donât really care.
'It can be difficult to play on these courts. I would want to play on a better court, for sure.
'Itâs not my fault. The organisation makes the decision and thatâs it.
'I donât know if a bigger crowd would have helped me.
'On a better court of course you can have challenges and review points, when you donât agree with the decision or the chair.
But we play on 17, and thatâs it.â
Admitting he cannot change his hot-blooded style, he said: âI will always be the same - sorry guys.â
Rangy South African Anderson saw off Fognini 4-6 6-4 2-6 6-2 6-1, with the Italian admitting in the final set he simply wanted his misery to be complete.
Asked why he rushed a service game trailing 5-0 in the final set, Fognini said: âI thought if I played one more game I would be in the shower.â
Confirming he will not contest his fine from the first round, Fognini said he enjoyed his tennis in SW19 - but not the All England Clubâs regulations.
âIâve really enjoyed it this year because I made the third round,â he said.
'Also because of the years before I always come here with a lot of memories.
'I like it here because Iâm really fast so I can run really well.
'The only things I donât like are the rules, Wimbledonâs rules; the white colour.
'Today I crashed the racquets against my knee because the court is really soft and I can damage it a lot.
âItâs true I havenât had a happy time. But if weâre talking about tennis, I really enjoy that, but the other stuff, I say no.â
Big-serving Anderson admitted Fogniniâs temper could have been to blame for their clashâs lowly scheduling.
âYouâre not sure what youâre going to get,â he said of facing Fognini.
'I guess thatâs the reason we were out on Court 17.
'It lived up to what I thought it was going to be like, a lot of talking
'Personally I just think thatâs the way he copes with some of the stress of being out on the tour.
âRegardless of whatâs going on you have to play and beat him. I did expect that a little going into the match, so I definitely felt a bit more prepared to deal with it.â
