All Ireland Final 2’19 - Kilkenny v Tipperary, a Traditional Final

3 players for Tipp aged 30 (and 1 sub that’s 31)
3 (?) Kilkenny 30+

Hardly old teams?

Tipp’s subs used in semi were 22, 21, 20, 20, 24.

Richie Hogan & TJ Reid are both 31. Both corner backs Joey Holden & Paul Murphy are 30 and Colin Fennelly is 30 next week.

Joey Holden is not 30

I’m assuming you’ve done extensive research on this @GeoffreyBoycott and you have the average age of starting 15s of all participating teams in the last 20 years or so?

Frank in fairness was steadfast in his respect for tradition, hierarchy and the rule book.
He had the cork county football final played on the October bank holiday Sunday notwithstanding when cork had exited the championship. . He was an absolute expert at fixture planning and no doubt he is utterly disgusted with this turn of events. He’d have have the clubs and the munster council know their place. .the Munster club hurling final would take place no earlier than 2pm on the last sunday of November with the football a week later. …he’d still ensure it out of spite id imagine…

I believe the Kilkenny team that started the 1987 final is the oldest team to take the field in the last half century. We’re not quite at that level on Sunday. Limerick had an average age of just over 22 last year.

Off the top of my head Offaly in 98 would have been quite old. Comparing it to Limerick last year or Clare in 2013 or 1995 are complete outliers.

Hanamy and Joe Dooley would have been well older than anything on the Kilkenny or Tipp side.

A quick Google tells me he’s recently turned 29

Advantage Kilkenny

Kilkenny are going to bully Tipp, KK by 5+

To have any player over 30 in an All Ireland Final is becoming increasingly rare. I believe Michael Fennelly in the 2015 final is the last outfield player to start for the winning team in an All Ireland Final who was over 30.

Never back agin Kilkenny in an all Ireland final. That is all.

First St Mary’s man to play in a final since Waterfords Donnacha Fahey?

Taught how to hurl in Kilkenny, what’s your claim to him?

He was only born, reared and lived in the county of Waterford. The money St Kieran’s shelled out to get this prospect on their books was shocking at the time.

The old mantra used to be never back against Tipperary in an All Ireland Final. After the 1965 final, Tipperary had a 78% success rate, 21 from 27. It has dipped down to 68% now, 27 from 40 but they don’t lose too many when they get there.

Kilkenny have a 58% win rate, 36 wins and 26 losses from 62 appearances. That’s improved considerably over last 20 years.Going into 2000 final, Kilkenny had won 25 and lost 23 from 48 appearances.

He took the soup?

Was part of a larger hurling outreach educational initiative. We took in stragglers from all sides of our border and beyond. Laois, Offaly and Tipperary being the most prominent in my mind.

Fahy wasn’t the last Tipp prospect looking for an extra something to their hurling education.

There was an unseemly bidding war between Colman’s and Kieran’s after word got out that the free spirited Fahey had become less than enchanted with the High School in Clonmel.
