Ireland Final? Prior to that, the last hurler to have played for St Mary’s Clonmel who featured in an Ireland Final was presumably Limerick’s Mossie Carroll.

He did. He came on as a sub. His defining roles though were in those great series of games between Tipp and Clare in Cork where he was like one of the Spartans at Thermopylae fighting back the alien hordes when all about him had given up the struggle.

Nice piece on the news last night from the Urlingford of the South, Carrick-on-Suir about frontier rivalry. Was Waterford’s Mick Roche the last Carrick representative to hurl in an All Ireland Hurling Final?

I’d say so. There was a chap called Ralph Callaghan from Carrick Davins who played in that almighty Munster Final in Thurles in 1984. He might be the last Carrick player to play championship for Tipp. There was a Carrick Swan chap called Tony Watters who ended up hurling for Waterford.

Carrick is a bit weird in that it is a hurling mad town with a ridiculously low representation on Tipp panels

I’ve met Ralph a few times over the years. Very nice fellow. He lives next door to a mate of mine on the Co. Waterford side of town now up beside the golf course.
