All-Ireland Football Championship 2022

Maybe you’re wrong and it will be good?

Shur Mick Reynolds made loads of them and the Twitter clowns leapt all over him.

Dublin played a dead rubber in the Super 8’s against Roscommon one year and it might as well not have taken place.

I dont think it could possibly be good that a Dublin or Kerry for example could rest players in rounds 6 & 7 vs Donegal and lose, leading to Monaghan or someone being knocked out by their actions.

There were four matches out of 24 in the Super 8s which had anything close to a proper championship feel.

Three of them involved Donegal - against Tyrone 2018 and Kerry and Mayo 2019. Monaghan v Kerry was the other one.

The other 20 felt like shit league matches.

Monaghan v Kerry had more on the line than an Ulster final - because it was in effect a knockout All-Ireland quarter-final with the winner going through and the loser going out. It was a draw, but that was almost as good as a defeat to Kerry, because it was always likely Galway would then roll over and have their bellies tickled by Monaghan the following week.

It was played on a Sunday afternoon in actual high summer, July 22nd. And yet barely 17k showed up to Clones and the place looked sparsely populated.

Whereas Clones is always a cauldron for the Ulster final.

Yeah that’s a big flaw alright. Dublin v carlow isn’t great either though.
Dublin basically ruined the football championship. That and Meath and Kildare being shit

a massive massive percentage of matches under the current system are shite and nobody cares about them. Hopefully this will be better it’s worth a try.

Most competitions in most sports around the world in theory, try to get the best 8 teams into the Quarter Final’s.

This format specifically dictates that this cant happen with teams 6, 7 and 8 scapegoated for teams way below them in the rankings.

20 Super 8 matches of High summer:

Dublin v Donegal 2018 - had a league feel to it
Roscommon v Tyrone 2018 - shit
Roscommon v Donegal 2018 - shit
Tyrone v Dublin 2018 - never felt like it mattered
Dublin v Roscommon 2018 - turkey shoot
Kildare v Monaghan 2018 - played in the pissing rain before 12 or 15k in Croke Park, nobody watched it because the World Cup final was on
Kerry v Galway 2018 - played in the pissing rain before 16 or 17k in Croke Park, nobody watched it because the World Cup final was on
Kildare v Galway 2018 - it was no Newbridge or nowhere
Kerry v Kildare 2018 - dead rubber turkey shoot
Galway v Monaghan 2018 - Galway didn’t try a leg
Roscommon v Tyrone 2019 - shit
Dublin v Cork 2019 - exhibition feel to it
Dublin v Roscommon 2019 - turkey shoot
Tyrone v Cork 2019 - turkey shoot
Cork v Roscommon 2019 - dead rubber Tommy Murphy Cup feel
Tyrone v Dublin 2019 - pointless outing for panel players
Kerry v Mayo 2019 - had nice weather and scenery
Donegal v Meath 2019 - league feel
Mayo v Meath 2019 - drudgery
Kerry v Meath 2019 - dead rubber turkey shoot

So address the underlying problem, not the symptom.

The fact they were tried when Dublin were so dominant certainly didn’t help. But when Monaghan played Galway in Salthill with Galway already qualified it was woeful, less than 5000 from Galway showed up to watch and the Galway players spent 70 minutes minding themselves for the semi-final the following weekend. You will have even more of that rubbish in this format.

Given the way they performed in the semi-final it might have served them better to try a bit harder.

Yeve convinced me it think it’s gonna be complete shit now. Hopefully we’re wrong though

So 110 votes or more needed for this to go through?

I think it will sadly and it will make a mess (even bigger one of the football championship). With Dublin looking to be regressing we were actually coming to a situation where the football championship was going to become more exciting and up for grabs and they could wreck it with this proposal.

It’s also clear from that graph that Munster counties have disproportionate sway in the GAA.

In terms of Football Championship reform, it’s mad that counties like Tipp and Limerick have more say than any Ulster county has.

It’s based on the number of clubs I think. More clubs = more votes but a max of 5 per county.

Do they have more football clubs in Limerick than Donegal for instance?

Here’s a full list of the league fixtures which will captivate the Irish public next April and May.

Can’t wait for Dublin v Kerry on Saturday May 7th at Croke Park. A top of the table clash with both teams already on four wins out of four, so a lot to play for.

Liverpool v Spurs throws in at 5:30.

“We’re confident that live sacar on the teilifís will have no impact at all on the attendance”, says GAA árd stiurthóir Tommy Who.

Football only clubs or dual clubs?

We have the same amount of football All Irelands as them anyway. And more than Armagh, Derry, Antrim, Monaghan and Fermanagh.

Just be glad the Munster counties have the hurling distracting us or the Nordies would win fuck all.
