All Ireland Football Final - An Classico

They cut out the “she died of a fever bit” anyway.

“Summer In Dublin” needs to become a staple of these occasions. Has it ever been played after an All-Ireland?

Be great for Fitz to sing the 46A part

I’d say it was more the alive alive oh bit

All the more pertinent with the split season. Another reason to stick with it

It was played in Coppers on Sunday night.

Followed by The Ferryman.

I’m doing out a list of songs I associate with particular matches, be they because they were hits of the time or because I heard them being played or sung that day or because they were songs that I was listening to a lot at the time.

For example I associate the 2016 Dublin v Mayo replay with the song Night And Day by U2, because I heard the song being played on the final day of Phantom FM 10 days or so previously, and then listened to it about 80 times between then and the replay. The song itself sort of suits the dystopian day/night Saturday evening October air that replay was played in. I also have it in mind’s eye that the second half of that final was played in increasing dusk, though it was actually still bright, but it didn’t feel bright.

I associate the 2017 Dublin v Mayo final with the song Big Sky by Kate Bush, because I was listening to a lot of Kate Bush at the time. I got the 5:45am bus from Galway to Dublin that morning and by the time it was past Kinnegad the sun was well up and it was shining extremely brightly in the big sky of the morning September air through the trees to the left of me, and I was listening to this song in my earphones, and the day felt stretched out in front of me, pregnant with possibility, to use a phrase you are fond of.

Limerick v Galway 2018 I associate, rather obviously, with Dreams by The Cranberries, because a smashing version of it had been sung on Up For The Match the previous night by the kids from Moyross, because I listened to the studio version of the song at least five times on the bus up, because it was played in the stadium afterwards, because Second Captains did a brilliant audio montage of that game with Dreams as the backing track, because that song was the soundtrack of the entire weekend.

I had to take a second look when I saw the Dubs on the front cover of the Herald.

Off The Ball back in the Second Captains days did a Euro 2012 show I think the day before we played Croatia which was basically saying anything can happen, we could win the fuckin thing and finished out the show with “Heyday” by Mic Christopher which I always associate with Euro 2012
