Gerry McInerney and Declan Ryan both had fantastic games marking each other
How come a limerick man ended up full back for tipp?
The big change is you had 14 individual battles on the pitch, there was a big emphasis on winning your own battle and your own ball no matter how it was delivered to you.
Savage Mac
Ryan got 0-4 I think and Gerry Mac got 0-2 from wing back.
Pity finnerty didnt finish denton off
Donie O’Connell and Keady similar
How come a limerick man ended up full back for tipp?
Tipperary have a tradition of recruiting players from outside the county - Mick Roche from Waterford, Tony Reddin from Galway, Denis Byrne from Kilkenny, Mossie Carroll from Limerick to name but a few more.
Pat Fox had a poor game.
Galway the better team but Tipp were a bit unlucky all the same, had a good few goal chances and one disallowed for nothing
Gerry Burke… Daithi’s ould lad?
Iconic goal and celebration with fans hanging off him.
Poor game, great result. I was 10, fucking hell… I hurled some amount of ball of the shed wall them years.
Comparing the modern game with this is pointless
There are huge differences -
- club coaching
- years in development squads
- most hurlers spend 4 years at least in college as near on full time hurlers
- Lighter sliotar
- hurleys better made
- S&C on another stratosphere
- players diets
- many more training sessions
Is the sliotar actually much lighter or is it just that the hurleys are better? It seemed watching that that when they caught the ball right they could hit it an awful distance but it was just harder to catch it right on the narrower bas
Both
If they make the sliothar any lighter now it would travel less.
I’d like to see a comparison of the sliotar weight. Commins hit a ball to the far 14 there, albeit wind assisted
Keepers always hit long . Big heavy hurleys and practice .
The sport of hurling changed enormously from the early 2000’s onwards with the advent of, basically, semi professionalism.
Matches from the 80’s and 90’s a world away from what you see today.
That Cork team with Cusack were probably the main drivers of it. The possession game. Short puck outs.
Other teams responded in kind, all the other trimmings came then. S & C, physios, stats, dieticians, video analysis, training camps.
Who knows, maybe in 30 years time the matches of this era will seem quaint.
