Frontal squats load the quads and knees more, but essentially let you squat deeper and straighter. This means you are gaining strength, mobility and flexibility in one go. That’s why a good squat beats all others. However some people do them poorly or can do them right but are already crooked.
Not mad on individual sports myself. Even though boxing is individual there is a team feel to it mostly. Did a few triathlons, especially in the states. Short ones, lost the appetite to move up very quickly. Like you say, lots of wankers attached to such sports now. People who are really really good at exercising.

Once you move up, you haven’t much interest in moving back down. Ive been at the tri club for 12 years about, and there is only one other person I reckon on a club of more than 400 who has been there longer. Interestingly, he is one of the lads I know well, and he dips in and out to suit himself like I tend to. It is all encompassing for some. I have seen people leave their jobs so they can try and knock half an hour off their ironman time.
Hard to get the form correct for the frontal squat but once you do you can really feel the benefits. Though having the bar wedged against your adams apple isn’t the most comfortable sensation you’ll ever experience.
I hold the bar in the crook of my elbow, like you are holding a baby or something. It seems to keep everything as it should be. I don’t go mad with the weight though. @Fagan ODowd , fair point, but hardly any more narcissistic that posting your favourite 100 films or songs?
KP, @caoimhaoin, @flattythehurdler, how do you get this right? Wedged against the Adam’s apple isn’t good; I’ve seen some lads with their elbows forward and hands under the bar, doesn’t feel good to me; making a shelf of the shoulders the bar tends to roll forward on me.
The arm position is like doing arm curls, at the top of the curl, when your fists are pointing up, you’ve made a V shape with your arms. Take the bar on the inside of your elbows. I’d start with half the weight or less that you usually squat and work up. You really need a soft towel or something to wrap the bar in, and it needs to be take off a rack of correct height for you. I use a bench press rack. It works a treat for me anyway as it forces you to balance yourself better and seems to force you back to stay straighter, though I always think about my back and keeping it well positioned as I do the lift. If I can’t keep my back well positioned relatively comfortably, I stop and reduce the weight. I do them slow and steady and am careful to to jerk or pull at it at any stage, as your back is well loaded. It is also really easy to pull a hamstring, like any squat lift I’d imagine, so I warm up well, and start light and keep it slow. Once warm, I do between 5x5 lifts, and 7x7 lifts, depending on how I feel. I am well below my body weight, maybe about 25% below. I could lift heavier but with less control as I tire, and it seems to work the bits I want to work perfectly well. That’s just me though, and may not be correct.
Surely worth a roll call for Sunday’s double header in Portlaoise, given the Bank Holiday weekend and the party town that is Portlaoise, it could quite possibly double as the TFK Summer Jamboree.
If your thugs injury any of my hero’s i’ll hunt you
