All-Ireland Hurling Championship 2019 II*** Up Laois

A very cheap line there at the endā€¦ I agree re the sentiment tho. Took too long to make changesā€¦ I addressed this in another post, I think we got the league wrong this year and for a lot of chatter about competition I think there was too much loyalty to last yearā€™s starting team throughout this year.

For what it is worth I would say that Derek McGrath is an excellent man manager and would run an excellent set up which players would buy into. I think his style of hurling will always hinder him though. Sweepers and systems very much have their place in the game and there is a time and place for them but putting them above all else will only get you so far. Hurling will always boil down to physicality, psychology and speed of thought, speed of eye and speed of wrist.

Too much time spent on perfecting a system means you are somewhat enslaved to it and other aspect of your game will be neglected and you will be found out.

Ah here, are you standing up for Babs?!

the sending of helped tipp as it meant they had one less forward and the less the forwards the better as if you have too many of them up there they only get in the way of themselves.
this is what davy and McGrath believe and yesterday they were totally vindicated.

Winning first 3 games comfortably really stood to Tipp, allowed them to ease off for a few weeks and target a semi final performance, probably crucial with their age profile. Iā€™d say they threw in the towel with 20 mins to go in the Munster Final. Grand when it works. Fuck it, outscoring opposition, with a man less, by 7 points in the last 25 mins of an AI semi final, brilliant. Also, very poor from Wexford, still a bit limited by lack of hurlers

Harsh. Theyā€™d love to have 2 or 3 more like Chin, who wouldnā€™t?, but even so they could easily have won that game yesterday

They should, and would if they had a bit more hurling. Lack that bit of craft, skill, first touch

A win often sees us gone for 10 years :grinning::grinning::grinning:

Is he coaching at senior level?

Iā€™d prefer to see him take the 20s first. A great man, one of our greatest. He has done tremendous things with Charleville, but perhaps has not the experience for Senior Inter county hurling just yet. By all accounts he has a terrific way with players. Charleville are mad about him

Is he a disciple of the tippy tappy short game that has crippled Cork hurling?

This attitude towards this"tippy-tappy" game is bollox IMO. Donā€™t see how it has crippled Cork hurling in recent years. It has been poor management, poor defence, lack of ability to close out games that has crippled us for the last 3 years. Our style of pure hurling will remain, albeit with a few tweaks such as an extra ball winner upfront. In 2017, and 2018 even I just felt we were a few defenders short of walking up those Hogan steps. Too many middling greyhounds that were never above average in a Cork jerseyā€¦ Joyce, Mcdonnell etc. For the first time since 2006, I think we have the players to do it, particularly up front obviously. Spillane was a huge loss this year. A top class defender. My 15 for 2020:
Collins
Oā€™Leary Cadogan (had a solid year IMO) Spillane
Hennessy Ellis Millerick/Oā€™Leary Hayes
Coleman Cooper
Dalton Fitzgibbon Connery
Cadogan Harnedy Horgan

Coached Cloyne when they were senior. Does a bit with juveniles afaik.

Dalton and Connery will never do. Dont work hard enough and modern day half fowards requires that and athletism. Millerick will deffo start. The best man marker since Brian Murphy.

I disagree about Conneryā€™s workrate. He wouldnā€™t be a half forward per se in that lineup. He would takeover the role of Meade and Kearney in progressing the ball up the field. Heā€™s more aggressive, has a serious eye for a score, and has a lot of Corkness in him. We need that bit of cutting in a lad.

As for Dalton, I think Tim Oā€™Mahony could also fill that role on the half forward line. Both excellent in the air. SeĆ”n Twomey is also a younger option.

How do you think he is doing in that role for u20s as that is role Ring has him playing?

Twomey and O Regan are best half forward options going forward.

Iā€™d have him at midfield for the 20s, which is where he was in the second half against Tipp. His shooting on sight approach defintely needs work, but heā€™s a serious, serious prospect IMO. The best weā€™ve had since Coleman/Fitz.

Biggest game for Cork hurling since the 21 final last year this weekend. We need this.

Iā€™d like to see Oā€™Regan half forward v Kilkenny too, with Turnbull, Sheehan inside
