All Ireland Hurling Final 2014- Kilkenny vTipperary

Darren Gleeson should have taken him out of his boots once he wasn’t going to get to the ball.

Agreed and taken his chances on the penalty.

Yep, people are saying that Tipp won’t be able to hurl any better in the replay.
They most definitely can, they can start by not conceeding 3-22. @chewy

That is a lovely turn of phrase mullach.

Absolutely, a lot of people saying KK have more scope for improvement, but Tipp can certainly improve the next day. Defensively they can start by not conceeding 3-22! Walter Walsh and Ritchie Power having the time to look up and steady before taking points in the 2nd half.
It’s true to say that switching Ritchie Hogan and Michael Fennelly made a big difference for KK, but I’d argue that Hogan didn’t play Centre Forward and got most if his scores by staying out(similar to Noel McGrath on Brick Walsh a few years ago). Paudie Maher held the centre and wasn’t dragged out but this allowed Hogan to pick off his scores. Tipp were slow enough to counter this, maybe Gar Ryan could have dropped back and denied Hogan space. While the forwards shot the lights out, I felt they made a couple of wrong decisions.
Callanan should have taken a point from the 1st penalty, there was no need to be giving KK a lift when Tipp had them rattled.
For his goal chance I felt he could have taken another step or two to evade the onrushing Murphy.
Gearoid Ryan failing to goal was inexcusable.
Noel Mcgrath hit a poor wide in the 1st half but went on to play well.
Tipp could’ve had five goals on another day, so I wouldn’t worry about hitting a few wides the next day if the goal chances can be converted.

I thought the worst thing Noël Mc Grath did was the big wild swing in the first half and getting hooked. It shouldn’t happen to a junior b hurler.

That was in a great passage of play before Michael Fennelly pointed for KK I think?

Can’t remember who scored but a score resulted alright.

Tipp - KK 2009, 2010
Clare - Tipp 1997
Cork- Clare 2013 drawn game.

The amount of mistakes first half was unbelievable.

It wasn’t near the quality of recent Tipp-KK games alone.[/QUOTE]

plenty of mistakes in the drawn game last year

Drawn game last year wasn’t a great game at all. Cork were very poor in the first half, and not a whole lot better in the second half except for a few magic moments that led to the goals. I actually thought the replay was a better game, Cork certainly played much better in general, but made some very soft mistakes for a couple of the goals.

If the replay is level or there is little in it with five or ten minutes left will Cody bring Shefflin on?

Tin hat on but it looks like Shefflin is on his last legs. Might be a bit harsh but the romanticism of bringing him on at all costs for number 10 nearly cost Kilkenny on Sunday IMO. The tide was just turning at that stage admittedly but like the semi final he did little enough when introduced (again, he was only on for a few minutes).

On the other hand he could also come up with a wonder point like the one against Galway in the drawn game in Tullamore. Before the Kilkenny lads get on their high horses I’m not having a go at Shefflin, he has been a great player but I just wonder if Cody feels a need to introduce him whatever happens.

agree with that. Clare were dominant in nearly all areas in the 1st game last year, cork were poor and the goals just kept them in it. After the 3 goals in the replay Cork played well . watched the game back again last night and is was epic but agree with other lads that some of the defending was poor esp (surprisingly) from KK. B Hogan, Tyrell & Holden esp were poor. intersting that the rte panal saying the game was brought to another level again with both brilliant atacking and defending… If that went to extra time Tip wud hav winnin well KK legs were gone. Hogan (2nd half) & Barret my motm, fckn unreal.

No fear of Kk lads givin any resistance to that, general consensus in kk is hes a mile off the pace. Been less than average at the last two rounds of club games too. Having said that hard to see him do worse than Wally Walsh the last day.

Brian Gavin gets the replay.

Jimmy Barry-Murphy made the very valid point yesterday about it being absolutely ridiculous that the replay is scheduled for 3 weeks later. It defies all logic. Utterly shambolic stuff.

Sounds like he’s still seething about losing last years replay. He should be, they fucked away a soft All Ireland.

Why didn’t he voice that in 2012?

The article didn’t tease that out, mate.

It might as well be next year. The old NHL used to start that weekend didn’t it?

October is not September.
