All Ireland Hurling Final 2024 - The Tony Kelly Final

Christ the Clare lads have some bizarre obsession about our fast puck-outs, presumably because they arenā€™t arsed to come up with their own strategy other than lorry it on top of Duggan. Let them play ffs.

They should be stopped. Itā€™s a nonsense.

Ah no, the Clare lads have a right to their opinion - saying they should be ā€œstoppedā€ is a bit much.

It wouldnā€™t be the first time the rules were changed to limit a perceived Cork advantageā€¦

Itā€™s very needy the way cork fans think they came up with short puck outs.

If cork have TOM not challenge but flail at the ball like in Supervalue park might as well let Duggan have a field day

Who is talking about short puck outs?

@TreatyStones

Jimmy Barry Murphy could play a big part in the final yet.

Whatā€™s he doing?

Umpire

I never came across him off the field but heā€™s savage annoying on it.

Did @South_Limerick_Refer umpire for him at one point? Could be wrong on that

What rule is being changed, literally the first rule in the book is

1.1 The ball is in play once it has been thrown in or pucked, after the referee has given a signal to start or restart play

All players have to be outside the 20m line
2.6 All players shall be outside the 20m line until the ball has been struck

Interestingly, or maybe not, if an opponent is inside the 20m line when the puck out is taken, it should be a free from the 20 in line with where that player was standing (4.14)

If a defender is inside the 20m line, its a throw ball on the 20 (4.28)

Ultimately, it comes back to rule 1.1. The ref has to signal the restart.

I meant quick pick outs. Sorry.

Joyce will pick up Duggan

Sure the ref could be winking at Collins for all you know.

The signal need not necessarily be a whistle.

Exactly. Youā€™d see refs waving the puck-out often enough, sometimes accompanied by a short whistle, sometimes not. Slow puck-outs suit teams with premium ball-winners like Duggan and Chin but itā€™s hilarious the two lads are acting like they arenā€™t being self-serving fuckers with this no quick puck-outs shite.

A referee will usually lay it out to both teams prior to the game. The general rule of thumb is quick puckouts after a wide are fine, once the ref is in a decent position to see the play. After a score heā€™ll generally tell goalies to wait for the signal as he has to record the score and he will be slower getting back into position.

Positioning is key. The ref should never be more than 15-20 metres from the play where feasible. While Tyler Walsh did well last Sunday there was one puckout allowed that went long to an unmarked Darragh Fitzgibbon, who put it over the bar. My point is that had Fitzgibbon decided to take on the defence and go into contact, Walsh would have been hopelessly positioned to make a judgment on any possible foul.

If Hego had his normal scoring touch heā€™d have ended up with 1-4 last Sunday - and the narrative around Joyce very different.
