For those of us from west of the Shannon (and old enough to remember it), there was a poetic justice yesterday in the furore over the 65 that wasn’t given. In the 1990 All Ireland Final, with the game finely balanced, Martin Naughton was denied a certain goal by Ger Cunningham’s schnozz. Naughton’s shot was deflected off the bridge of Cunningham’s nose, and was waved wide by the umpires.

Legend has it that they did, but alas TNH. Tony Keady caught the puck out, was tackled to the ground by two Cork players, and then handpassed the ball off the deck straight to Tony O’Sullivan, who gratefully tapped it over the bar. Mark Foley scored a point then, followed by some bad misses by both teams. It was almost 10 minutes after Nosegate that Mark Foley scored the goal that put Cork up by a point.

The gas thing about the incident was that Cunningham needed treatment for the knock he got on the snout. What did the umpire think hit him? A projectile from the crowd?
