Allianz National Hurling League 2025

Don’t see a thread set up for this yet outside of the main GAA betting thread which I will still be updating.

New structure this year with 2 up/down means Division 1A should have a good bit of competitiveness compared to other years.
Teams will probably need 5/6 points to guarantee safety.

Opening round fixtures are:
Wexford (+7) v Cork in Wexford Saturday
Galway (-2) v Tipp in Salthill
Clare (-1) v KK in Ennis
Limerick have a bye

Wexford down a good few bodies hence why they have went out to +7 in round 1. Conor Macdonald is injured & Chin is away.
Cork looked very sharp in that challenge game v UCC. Traditionally they don’t target the league but this year may be different.

Tipp have played a raft of challenge games in recent weeks with a variety of teams, there most high profile was a loss to a fiery Dublin last Saturday in Fethard.
Cahill is going to give game time to u20 players like Darragh McCarthy & Sam O Farrell for sure during the league. O Farrell is the most complete player of the 2022 minor team, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t play championship.
Elsewhere there’s huge voids to fill for Tipp and the public are beginning to doubt some of Tipperary’s insistence to play such a style with the players we have. A good league will be to avoid relegation.

Galway are also a bit of an unknown, they have a good record at home so will be targeting this win as it could decide relegation. I actually expected more retirements/droppings over the Xmas so it will be interesting to see what team O Donoghue conjures up. Young players like Kileen/McGlynn etc need to be pushing on.

Clare are down a few bodies apparently for their opener to KK at the weekend. You’d imagine they will be slightly behind the cats fitness wise thus far. I think they may be slightly vulnerable this weekend and in the early rounds so may be just happy to survive after a long year last year. Sean Rynne & Jack O Neill 2 players I like that should add to their side.
KK kicked the shit out of Offaly last week, they’d a good u20 team last year that underachieved so you’d expect players like Harry Shine and Eoin Lyng to push on.

Limerick down a few bodies early on so you might see a mix of experience and experimentation.

My own prediction for the 7 would be:
Cork v Limerick final
3 KK
4 Galway
5 Tipp
Clare & Wexford relegated.

On the 1B, I’d say Waterford and Dublin will be content enough to be building from this position.
Waterford have a good few injuries and Lyons is some loss for the season. I expect them to stutter to a league final v Dublin.

Dublin are at home to Antrim in week 1 in Parnell which could decide the top 2, the Davy bounce might be harder to find as Gleeson had them going well. Conal Cunning is out for the league at least and McManus would be better served performing on the pitch than his guru backroom gig.
I can’t see anything but a Dublin win after being impressed with them last week v Tipp even if the na fianna lads will be given the week off.

Looking forward to it now. Will throw up my usual selections on the betting thread later in the week when teams are announced.

I think Limerick will be happy enough just to stay up. Possibly looking at a Cork v Clare final

If Cork are tuned in at all, they should be winning this.

Everyone else seem to be either seriously depleted, rebuilding or just not up to much.

Dublin Antrim is in Croke Park before Dublin Mayo

Shur where else would it be

I doubt anybody has any real interest in it.

Clare won it last year and lost to Limerick first time up.

I’d say nearly everyone will be happy enough to be out of it particularly the Munster counties.

Could see kk winning it out.

I’d say Clare will take the same approach as last year - 8 or 9 of the core lads starting each game with half a dozen newer/unproven lads getting an opportunity to stake a claim.

Duggan, TK, Diarmuid Ryan and Cleary are all musing for the early stages with SOD swerving the league again.

What is the format this year? Semi finals like last year?

I’d say in 1A early rounds will be competitive as everyone will just want to avoid relegation, could fizzle out near the end, 1B should be competitive with more at stake.

Think it’s top 2 into the final but not 100% on that.

Top 2 straight into the final.
Bottom 2 relegated.

Top 2 in 1B promoted and into a league final.

That 1B final sounds utterly pointless, 2 weeks before championship it would nearly be a nuisance with promotion already in the bag.

Just read that.

If it’s two teams from different provinces then it’s a nice preparatory game. In the case of Dublin & Waterford they don’t exactly have tonnes of silverware so they’d probably take a win if possible.

You’d imagine it will be a nice curtain raiser for the 1a final.

A Dublin v Waterford 1B Final, followed by Cork v Kilkenny in the 1A decider would be an exceedingly attractive double header for Semple Stadium to host in early April.

Fergal’s dream.

Looks like wexford will struggle big time. 3 retirements plus chin & Liam Ryan unavailable, probably others too.
Eoin whelan probably get a go full back.
Tipp could do better than some think. Clare will just go through the motions I think.
Kilkenny and galway are interesting. Not a word coming from out west.
Cork will make the league final I’d say

Kilkenny are in an strange spot - they probably need to blood as many lads as they can and see can they find some new options and depth but that isn’t really the Kilkenny way - the culture is very much that the jersey is earned and the here and now rather than taking a longer term view in player development and letting lads take their lumps to be better in 18 months time.

Lyng seems fairly conservative too - maybe the talent isn’t there but I don’t think he is the man to blood and develop lads either.

Thoughtful lads.

I think we are in huge trouble. Matt O Hanlon, Dee O’Kefee and Liam og have retired. Liam Ryan, Damien Reck and Conor Mac are injured and we wont have them for the league but hopefully they will be back for championship. Jack O’Connor is travelling and Lee Chin is in Australia at the minute with no expected return date.

Anyway we’ll be fairly experimental for the league. As long as we are competitive thats all that matters.

Chance Chin won’t be back for championship so?
